Pence, on the campaign trail in Nevada as the vice presidential running mate of Donald Trump, was confronted by the mother of an active duty serviceman, who asked him to account for Trump’s disparaging comments about Khizr and Ghazala Kana, a Muslim-American couple whose son was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan. The question was pointed. And the crowd of Trump enthusiasts started booing the mother. Pence immediately and calmly quieted the crowd so that the mother could continue speaking.
He then said this, looking at both the mother and the crowd: “It’s okay . . . . well, I thank you for the question. . . it’s all right . .. folks, that’s what freedom looks like and that’s what freedom sounds like. Let me say first that I want to honor your son’s service to the country and your family’s service to the country, I truly do. Let me say I know this has been much in the news of late . . . but as I said last night, as Donald Trump said on Saturday night, Captain Khan is an American hero and we honor him and honor his family as we do all Gold Star families."
When I saw this response, I was struck by two things: that Pence is a man of basic human decency and compassion, whatever his politics; and that nothing could be more at odds with the character and behavior of his running mate, the man who is running, with his support, to be President of the United States — Donald Trump. The distance between Mike Pence and Donald Trump is huge. It is the distance between a politician who is a leader of one of our country’s two major political parties, and a rude and boorish real estate magnate who has no political experience, no respect for his own party, and no respect for the constitutional system he is seeking to govern.
I truly feel badly for Gov. Pence, for in the interest of his party he has hitched his wagon to the Trump campaign. Mike Pence is now a virtual hostage to Donald Trump’s bizarre and offensive campaign.
Donald Trump is making a mockery of Mike Pence
