Alabama Republican State Senator Thinks Teacher Raises Go Against the Bible

“It’s a Biblical principle. If you double a teacher’s pay scale, you’ll attract people who aren’t called to teach,” said [Shadrack] McGill.

I cannot officially weigh in on the biblical principle since America is supposed to be a secular society, but it’s safe to assume that when it comes to the Alabama legislature, the Peter Principle comes to mind.

“To go in and raise someone’s child for eight hours a day, or many people’s children for eight hours a day, requires a calling. It better be a calling in your life. I know I wouldn’t want to do it, OK? And these teachers that are called to teach, regardless of the pay scale, they would teach. It’s just in them to do. It’s the ability that God give ‘em. And there are also some teachers, it wouldn’t matter how much you would pay them, they would still perform to the same capacity. If you don’t keep that in balance, you’re going to attract people who are not called, who don’t need to be teaching our children. So, everything has a balance,” said McGill

While it’s hard to dispute such a flawless and reasoned argument, I’ll have to throw caution to the wind and say that McGill is categorically wrong. The amount of undue and unjustified rancor towards educators, devoted and passionate thinking people who willingly take mediocre salaries and deal with your sexting, ADHD, pain-pill distributing brats 8 hours a day in exchange for a generous pension, is insufferable and must stop.

Curiously enough, McGill found absolutely no biblical grounds on which to not authorize a 67 percent pay increase for legislators in 2007, which increased annual salaries for the part-time legislators from $30,710 to $49,500.

I suppose giving legislators pay raises is a biblical principle, too. /sarcasm/

What is it with these people and their Buy-Bulls, they need them to let them know the right time to wipe their ass? Seriously, they use it like a shield to protect them from having to take any responsibility for their decisions. You don't think that the teachers salaries should be raised (I have issues with that also)? Then vote them down but be adult enough to own your actions. This is where being an atheiest has a distinct advantage (just one of many) over believers, right or wrong WE own our actions, we don't hide behind a book!

what was I thinking it is a calling so we can pay them less. Doctors look out your pay is about to be decreased.

I thought public service as a senator was a calling, I'm glad he set me straight public service is just a cynical way to make money and gain power.

It is when your bible was written by Machiavelli.

This was posted by another Viner a few weeks ago, can't remember who or I would most certainly give the credit, but it was just so true:

What is a believer ?

You know, all of this makes sense to the kind of person who:

Believes an invisible god created man, then erased all evidence of his own existence.

Granted his creation free will but promises to punish him for eternity for exercising it.

Regularly intervenes on worldly affairs, based on the prayers of some people but not other.

Acts mercifully and with omnibenevolence, as he smites thousands in vengeance.

Has the power to do what ever he wants, and chooses to let humans, his creation, suffer on a regular basis...just to make sure they still love him.

And all of this was revealed to mankind 1000's of years ago in the levant desert to bronze-age shepherd... The most ironic thing of all...they are the same people that don't believe in evolution or global warming because there is not enough evidence!

It amazes me that the teaching profession in foreign countries is something that is held in high esteem. But, in the U.S., teachers are bastardized and degraded as if they were common criminals. Let see where this nation goes if we just shut down all K-12 public education

The GOP would love to shut down public education....

I do agree with you. We abuse teachers here. Trust me, I'm one of those "lazy, not bright, ignorant" teachers.

I am one of those "spoiled and whiney" teachers too. LOL

One aspect that is great about our educational system in America is the fact that anyone may get an education. K-12 is freely available to the public, and that is not the case in many of the countries to whom we keep comparing our system. Everyone may go to high school without competing for seats. (This great aspect might also be causing some of our issues.)

Thanks. I like to think of our country as noble for trying to educate everyone. In a way, I don't like how we do try to force it though.

And a poorly educated population -- which some will just blame on teachers, instead of too many so-called 'leaders' like this.

I see the lack of the expectation of personal responsibility being a much bigger problem.

Typical comment by a republican, ignorant and destructive. Him and his ilk are the ruination of a once fine country. The sad part is that many equally hypocritical, brain dead Americans support this position...
