the Obama campaign is making no secret that it sees a possibility to win over military voters—long thought to be a GOP stronghold—an important constituency in key battleground states such as Florida, Virginia, and North Carolina.
Obama’s wins — from the bin Laden killing to this week's news that U.S. special forces freed an American hostage from Somali pirates — will only help the president with the military community and beyond, former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell told Democrats at their annual issues conference on Thursday.
"He's taken the security issue totally away from the Republicans," Rendell said.
As a result, Obama may be capturing some of that vote, observers say.
“The military is feeling a lot better about Obama today than they were when he took office,” said Loren Thompson, a military analyst at the Lexington Institute. “He has kept spending at much higher levels than anybody expected and he has generally supported the force as it surged in Afghanistan and carried out some dangerous special ops missions.”
In particular, Thompson said military officials have backed the risks the president has taken with the special operations missions, like the one which sealed bin Laden’s fate.
“They recognize he risked his political future by taking a chance on their ability to perform,” Thompson added.
Michael O’Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who specializes in national security and defense policy, agrees with that sentiment.
“I think he has made some inroads,” O’Hanlon said. “He handled the Iraq drawdown more carefully than promised and showed a fair amount of toughness towards Afghanistan as well as al Qaeda, and to date at least defense cuts have been handled carefully.”
At the same time, Retired Army Col. Robert Killebrew, a Pentagon consultant and senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, said he was initially critical of the president’s foreign policy because he “overestimated his ability to persuade.”
Killebrew said he’s been won over this past year, in particular by the way Obama has handled Iran and Libya.
“He’s actually racking up a pretty impressive list of achievements,” he said.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz), the war veteran who opposed Obama in the 2008 presidential race and won the veterans' vote, said the budget cuts announced Thursday “would repeat the mistakes of history and leave our forces too small to respond effectively to events that may unfold over the next few years.”
Such arguments could hurt Obama in the fall.
But so far, Team Obama is feeling pretty confident over their handling of the new strategy. In an unprecedented move, Obama traveled to the Pentagon earlier this month to explain the budget cuts in person.
“Yes, our military will be leaner, but the world must know—the United States is going to maintain our military superiority with armed forces that are agile, flexible and ready for the full range of contingencies and threats,” Obama said at the time, flanked by the nation’s top military officials, a visual that sent a strong message about the unity of the move.
And the campaign—with its Veterans and Military Families unit—has spent time building support. As of this week, Veterans for Obama claimed more than 16,000 supporters on its Facebook page.
John McCain was wrong about Barack Obama in 2008, and a very successful 3 years of President Obama as Commander-in-Chief shows that he's still wrong about him in 2012.

“Yes, our military will be leaner,
The Republicans are all about 'fat' when it comes to the military.. over the decades it has been "feed" the Defense plants/contractors, and large military.. President Obama has single handily proven from the office of the Prez., that it isn't necessary to have this huge fighting machine...
He has proven twice that it only takes Special Forces..and a few guys to go into a situation "Unannounced" .. not a huge display of force which we all can remember from the televised action before entering Iraq.. "Here We Come"..which gives our enemy something to prepare for.. We can do ..Yes We Can.. Leaner and with the technology that we have land, sea, and via satellites.. lessen our forces.. which means more men & women who are not placed in harms way... One other thing.. as a lad I was told growing up "Never telegraph what you are going to do, just do it".. and the Prez. did exactly that twice, and the Seal Team was more effective in what they did, without the huge barrage "We're Coming".
John McCain should of hung up his boots a long time ago.. Unfortunately his time as a POW ..and I salute him for his service.. has taken its toll.. as the years have gone by .. However, he has been a champion for our service members, and certainly the Vets.
The President as I mentioned has proven his worth to the military.. and the military has reacted favorably towards him...not because of the words he speaks, but through actions. One thing the military as a whole is inspired by, is showing them as the "fighting machine" that they are. I know as a Vet it gives me (for a lack of a better term) "goosebumps" knowing how successful he has been ..and not him alone but how our military has gone in twice without the barrage to go into a situation and come out clean.. even my morale has increased, and the feeling has been overwhelming by that success...and knowing we do not need 150,000 plus lives on the line, to do it.. and one other aspect of this too.. is that he has the balls to do it.. which was lacking by one administration 3 years ago. I salute the men and women who have given their lives and for those in the military doing what have for this country.. We could of went in Afghanistan the same way without "Telegraphing" what we were going in for..once you do telegraph.. then one puts the other side on the defensive.. and both times the President remain cool about it.. I salute him as well.

Par - I completely agree with the above. One thing that will get the military brass on your side is to show them you have the confidence in their ability to get the job done without sitting on their shoulders and second guessing them. President Obama IS the Commander in Chief of the nation's military, those on the far right won't agree but those military and Vets without an agenda and who seriously think about it will agree with that assessment. As to the far right wingers, who really gives a s_h_i_t what they think!

I felt it during the SOTU, as I have for some time now: there's a real respect between Pres. Obama and the military leaders. And it flows both ways. My DH is military, and he and his fellow military recognize the need to trim spending, but are watching carefully to see where the cuts go and how they affect us. So far, they are on board with the decisions being made. Even the ones that affect them personally (like NOT advancing to Captain or cutting JFCOM) they understand the logic behind. When the decisions make sense, that garners respect. And when there is respect, sound decisions will be made.

First of all .. There is documentation regarding the United States and other countries that if there is a need then the U.S. and these other countries will endeavor to protect other countries. I just forgot what these documents are at this time.. but we have sworn to protect not only our country.. but those who are crucial not only to the world's defense but to ours too.. I am sure someone on here can give the correct terminology that I have forgotten at this time..
Our Military - The Men & Women who wear the uniform who have taken the oath, will serve proudly no matter where we are sent. Secondly, those who have not been in the military and served .. rarely will understand what it is all about. What the Press prints may give some ..and very little insight .. but for the Men & Women who have served we know what it is about.. We do not for the most part expect anyone outside of the Military to understand to the fullest what it is.. that would drive a person to join and to serve.
Also - The President is Not being like Bush.. unless you haven't read your history... Bush/GOP Cheney .. etc.. is the war party..

Marshal James, I am a pacifist by nature, but even I know that doesn't work in the real world. There are countries out there that don't thin ktwice about visiting violence on others. Ron Paul is an isolationist. In the 21st century, that won't fly. The world is too inter-connected now. Wierd news from the most remote of places can spread around the world within hours - 20 years ago, you didn't even though the place existed.
It would have been the highest of irresponsible behavoir and a dereliction of his duties had Pres Obama come in and immediately end the wars. Bush and co. put us in two terrible situations, and it took and takes time to extricate the country out of them.
Bush Jr left a whole lots of messes and set up a lot of things that just can't be ended.

ben,
The current USA navy is to protect the ocean tankers for British Petroleum and Royal Dutch Shell. I have no objection for sending them an invoice.
Now, if Americans can decide to build a merchant marine, the USA navy fits in perfectly.
Of course the navy performs many more missions and some major accomplishments over the past 60 years are known to only the few who participated.

' real respect between Pres. Obama and the military leaders ' Butt kissing by the Joint Chiefs does not constitute ' respect '. I doubt that the rank-and-file will miss the fact that Pres. Obama is choosing to cut 80K of them, instead of cutting back on the welfare state... plus the military tends to be patriotic, and I suspect that they resent Pres. Obama constantly running down our country... Ed Renell ? That guy gives party hacks a bad name.
@best,
But how much of a navy do we need? Not to take anything away from US Navy officers -- some of whom number among my friends -- but there are other ways to get the job done. Building and maintaining naval vessels is expensive, and our resources could right now be better spent elsewhere.

We have about 55,000 ship builders needing work. Sparrowa Point steel plate mill needs work. So, we build double walled tankers to either import oil or export oil. WE already export taconite, coal, corn wheat. Why not deliver with American crews aboard American flag vessles.
I am not proposing increasing the fleet sizes for the US navy. I am simply saying that the current fleets protect and monitor the entire globe.

No GOP POTUS, accept for Bush 41 (Gulf War 1) has won a decisive military victory since Lincoln. WW1 & 2 both won under Democrats.
The GOP recently cut $75m from programs serving homeless Veterans after repeatedly stating they would never touch veterans programs and are right now trying to privatize VA benefits and pensions as well as increasing Tri-care co-pays and voting against the New GI Bill.
Meanwhile, under this POTUS we, killed or captured 19 of 20 top Al Queda leaders including Bin Laden, and helped rid the world of the single greatest supporter of terror against the west: Quidaffi.
No doubt at all where this career Veteran stands.

Oh, this whole article cracks me up. All of a sudden, support from the troops is important. I have news for you, the troops support Ron Paul and none of his supporters are likely to change their minds, they'll remain loyal to the voice of freedom. Freedom, true freedom has a funny way of convincing them that it really is worth their lives. Obama is backed by the banks and the banks profit from war. He talks a good game for his reelection campaign and his followers will champion it as a positive, but the numbers will show otherwise.

When you bond with your brothers and sisters in arms under extreme conditions, It forms a fraternity of service.
You cannot buy, lie or cheat your way in. but once you are a member, you are a member for life.
This esprit de corps spans all generations, politics, color, race or creed.
It makes the Dogface who stormed the bloody machine gun swept beaches of Normandy and the Lance Cpl manning a lonely OP in a chilly Afghanistan mountain gap equals and brothers for life.
And it is the glue of this resolve and the definitiveness of purpose that make it possible for American warriors to rain down upon the enemies of her freedoms with a swift and awful hand of doom.
To enable this spirit of our fighting men and women means letting them now that while they venture to bad and distant places to protect our interests and freedoms abroad, we will stand for them and theirs here at home.

The key bit is he is keeping america secure without killing Americans. Yes there is Afghanistan but that wasnt a war of his devising. IF you look at the military actions he did plan. Killing osama, over throwing Libya, saving people from pirates(including our enemy the iranians), it hasnt been expensive and it hasnt killed Americans and there has been very little backlash from it.
He really should chant how he kept american secure for 3 years and steal that Dick Cheney chant. AS he has actually kept us more safe than Bush. There havent been anthrax attacks and sniper attacks and other things the right like to forget happened while Bush was busy keeping us safe.

I'll have to disagree with the many on here, being retired military, the POTUS and CIC does not get my vote. If you choose to see him through "rose colored glasses" that is your choice. He is not the person you seem to worship as the savior of this country. The only way to ruin this country is to devastate the economy, with that in mind, since he became POTUS he and the democratic lead House and Senate has added over $4t to our debt. He panders to the military as he panders to the poor and immigrants to influence their votes and strengthen his base. Your tax dollars are paying for big government salaries and retirement, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and now Nation Health Care (ObamaCare), the EPA paying out hundreds of millions of dollars to failed companies. Obama will collapse this Constitutional Republic. Larger Executive Power (Dictator), Big government (Facism), Tyranny looms.
Obama is not who you think he is. He will not get my vote. Take off the "rose colored glasses". One last comment, The POTUS SOTU address with his I did this, I will do that, it is all about me, and I will bypass Congress, it must be fair and equal for all, you get paid what I get paid, he will limit what a CEO can earn. Much of the same rhetoric that Hugo Chavez used over 10 years ago to gain power and the Dictatorship of Venezuela.
If you were or are currently a patriot as a member of the military, devoted and sacrificed because of your love for this Constitutional Republic, don't let it be taken away by the Obama, Reid, Pelosi and cronies ideologies and what this country is all about.

Not sure were Chavez and going to war came from, we are not going to war with Venezuela and Chavez will stay in power as long as we and others continue to buy his oil. But, when we have Dems talking about nationalizing our own oil industry among other industries, it sounds pretty Chavezistic to me. Every President and their administrations have kissed rings and other parts of the body so we can buy their oil and keep those countries, that do not care for us very much flush with money and their people are suppressed.
A big government with power is not "we the people". A big government continuing to spend billions of dollars is hurting this country. The POTUS stating that if Congress will not act in his interest he will expand Executive powers and act without them. That's not a Constitutional Republic. Attacking Capitalism, when many progressives made their millions through Capitalism is contradictory and any laws passed, they will protect themselves because they make the laws. Everything should not be equal, I work hard for what I earn, and having to pay taxes to be paid to someone who does not goes against the gain. We are not a Socialists country, nanny to grave. The government should not be taking care of everyone, that's why we have charities and churches to help those less fortunate. It has worked for years, what is different now other than progressives wanting to "fundamentally change" America.
So if you go in your back yard and grow food for your family to sustain yourselves for the year and then the government comes in and says you have to give that food to them and share and you only get to keep half of the food regardless of all the labor you put into it and now can not feed your family, your okay with that? That is the progressives direction, big government and screw you. Reach out and grab a hand tool and grow food, verses reaching out to the government for another entitlement.
Not sure were Chavez and going to war came from, we are not going to war with Venezuela and Chavez will stay in power as long as we and others continue to buy his oil.
Your posting that link to an article about Chavez wanting good relationships with the Obama administration was not meant to be a compliment to Obama. So, if you are unhappy that a leader of a country wants good relations with a US administration, I don't know what else would make you happy but a bad relationship.onship
And if you were offering the link as some kind of sign that Obama is like Chavez because Chavez wants a good relationship with him, that's just as senseless. If David Cameron, the Conservative leader of the UK, wants a good relationship with the Obama administration it doesn't mean Obama's anymore like him than he is like Chavez.
Such comments make you come off as someone who simply hates Obama and will say any half-baked thing to criticize him.
But, when we have Dems talking about nationalizing our own oil industry among other industries, it sounds pretty Chavezistic to me.
When has the President ever proposed such a thing?
- 6 votes
America's right-wing have become authoritarian. Authoritarians make terrible managers. They answer to an internal set of demands, rather than external reality. They frame their thoughts, ideas, and actions in terms of personal needs, rather than the demands of the situation. They tend to be opportunists, as well, much preferring to take something away from any situation or event than to working, at the cost of self-sacrifice, to build something or achieve something of value.
It's no wonder, then, why Obama has succeeded where the right-wing has failed. He, and his administration, are not hobbled by the stupidity and impotence of authoritarianism.

More soldiers have donated more money to Ron Paul's campaign than to that of Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rich Santorum and Rick Perry combined, according to the Federal Election Commission. Ron Paul has also received far more financial contributions from soldiers than President Obama, Hilary Clinton, or any other leading Democrat.
This poses a bit of a dilemma to Paul's rivals, who accuse him of being soft on war and of advocating military policies that would be dangerous to the nation. It is hard to be too critical when so many of the rank-and-file evidently support Paul.

It is OK to be for a strong North American defense and be frugal about the lives that are wasted, body parts amputated and inflicting nightmares that occur for about 1 million combat veterans.
The health care costs for retirees is now about 51 billion dollars. Up from about 11 billion twelve years ago. The democrats have improved VA, including 55,000 desert storm VII corp soldiers who were exposed to improperly administered vaccines in Germany, the burning oil fields in Kuwait - yes, we just drove on in, and the explosive demolition of a nerve gas depot, that wafted far.
But, the 21,000 surge in Feb. 2009 followed by the 33,000+ in Jan. 2010 was not needed.
The prez was bamboozled by McChrystal, Petraeus and Gates. Hired 250,000 aghans as police and soldiers on American payroll. Discovered half are illiterate. Budgeted billions to educate this group up thru 3rd grade.

and some also assume the military is monolithic.

Oath keepers who disregard their oath's during time of war, or at any other time for partisan politics do not speak for this soldier.

So you Guy's think upholding the constitutionis a joke? I spent 20 years in the Army most of it in one nasty little place or the other, I Will defend my country from enemies foreign and domestic ! you want to ruin the country you are in for one hellof a fight.
James, no one wants to ruin the country, get over yourself.
Geez, and right after I get done praising the intelligence of our military!

CPOSharky, sorry bud you have no clue as to my intelligence level (on the very high end) and a lifetime security clearance that is higher than some polititions. Over the last twenty years there has been more dirty stuff in the upper levels of government than you could not even imagine. I have no politicle preferences as the polititions for the most part are socialists or comunists (do a little searching it is true), personally I think there is no future for the USA as it has been.
lifetime security clearance
Pray tell who issued you a lifetime Security Clearance? Because that isn't how they work in the military...

My, very full of ourselves aren't we. Look everyone knows that politicians are dirty, corrupt for the most part and it has been going on for much longer than 20 years, socialists or commies, good for a chuckle anyway. That's why Obama was such a breath of fresh air, hadn't been in Gov't long enough to obtain that DC stench and he has done a good job inspite of everything against him.
Your last statement I do tend to agree with, there is no future for this country unless we change our ways. We have been an overbearing, self centered country with no ones interests in mind except our own. We have bullied, cajoled and outright invaded countries that didn't agree with us or who threatened our Daddy. Or, perhaps it was just to show daddy that he was now a man and he could finish the job, trouble is he just made another mess.
BTW - for someone of such high intelligence, you certainly write at a very low level.

When they start coming for your "essence", *that's* when you fight back!

Zen, think again the government issues "act of secrecy" clearances. and hey because I am severly disabled and homebound I do get a kick out of stirring you lefties up. And because you people are so hatefull Its like so easy to do. hehe

Stir away my friend. Don't know why you think the left is so full of hate, don't see anyone on the left telling people to get out of the US, etc. But if it makes you feel better to think we do then by all means have at it.
Thank you for your service!
