He may be a cad and a rogue, but we think he's a winner: How Gingrich won 'values voters.'

in SouthNewt Gingrich won 46 percent of the evangelical vote in South Carolina.

Evangelicals have long celebrated their status faith, family and values voters.

What explains this?

Expediency.

When Rick Perry, a devout conservative Christian, withdrew from the race, throwing his support to Gingrich, he said, “Newt is not perfect, but who amongst us is? There is forgiveness for those who seek God and I believe in the power of redemption.”

Translation: “He may be a cad and a rogue, but he can win.”

When the chips are down, it seems faith, family and values go out the window...

Gingrich said at the South Carolina debate that asking about his personal life is “despicable.” If you agree with this candidate, why is it okay to advocate denying gay men and lesbians the right to marry if one’s private life should be private? Why is it more acceptable to cheat on multiple wives and treat them badly, than to be faithfully and lovingly married to one partner of the same sex?

Why is it all right to abandon your own values, ethics and morals to vote for someone who has not adhered to those same values?

Why is it wrong for the media to report on the private lives of candidates you support (Gingrich) but fine to do the same for candidates you do not support (Clinton)?

For those who haven’t been following Gingrich’s personal life, here is a capsule version: He married his first wife, Jacqueline, at 19 and had two daughters. His wife developed uterine cancer. He began having an affair with Marianne, who became his second wife, and when Jacqueline was in the hospital having a tumor removed he visited her to ask for a divorce. He then married Marianne. While they were married, he carried on a six-year affair with his current wife, Callista. During this period he was one of the House leaders pressing for the impeachment of President Clinton for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. After Marianne developed Multiple Sclerosis, he asked, according to her account, if they could stay married while he continued his affair. When she said no, he called her on the phone to tell her he wanted a divorce. Two days later, he gave a speech on family values called “The Demise of the American Culture.” During his conversion to Catholicism, he asked the Catholic Diocese of Atlanta for an annulment of his second marriage and it was granted. “We were married 19 years and now he wants to say it didn’t exist,” Marianne said in an interview.

Hypocrites supporting a hypocrite.

Oh yea... my father & mother were married for over 30 yrs & had six kids. When they split (my father went for the younger model), his new wife wanted a church wedding. He got his annulment too. Makes me wonder... does that make me illegitimate since the marriage did not exist? And my father preached to me about going out with my best friend for fish frys on Friday without our husbands. Made us look like sluts according to him.

Christians who vote for Newt Gingrich are as big sinners as Gingrich, they know it and don't care.

Military Reconstruction Act of 1867

The U.S. Congress, under the control of the Radical Republicans, passed the Military Reconstruction Act of 1867 on March 7, in spite of President Johnson's veto. This act sought to rebuild the governments of the southern states using the governments of the northern states as examples. It was also implemented to ensure that the civil rights of the free blacks in the South by requiring the states in the South to include the rights of free blacks in their constitutions. The Military Reconstruction Act divided the South into five military districts. Virginia became the first district, North Carolina and South Carolina the second district, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida the third district, Mississippi and Arkansas the fourth district, and Louisiana and Texas the fifth district. These territories were placed under the military control of the United States. The first military commanders had virtually unlimited power. The Military Reconstruction Act also required the southern states to elect new government officials. This is because following the Civil War, the representatives from the South that arrived in the capital to represent their states were the leaders of the Confederacy during the Civil War! The people that had been fighting the Union merely months before had shown up in Washington, D.C. to take their seats in the government. This created many problems because there was too much tension in the government between the southern representatives and the northern representatives. The final term of the Military Reconstruction Act was that the new southern state governments needed to pass the 14th Amendment (which defined citizenship and gave every citizen the right to due process).

The Military Reconstruction Act is important to history for many reasons. This act was a way that the Radical Republicans in Congress could punish the southern states that had previously made up the Confederacy. It was also a way that they could ensure rights for the free blacks in the South. The southern Democrats at the end of the Civil War knew that once slavery was abolished, they would need a new way to control wealth and labor in the South so that they could, once again, be the most powerful and influential people in the South. To do this, they had passed "Black Codes", which limited the rights of the free blacks. These codes were different in each state, and they were strongly opposed by the Radical Republicans. The Military Reconstruction Act was a way that the Radical Republicans could ensure the free blacks certain rights, and also punish the southern states for their behavior before and during the Civil War. The southern states vote for the Republicans, they must have a short memory.
