the St. Petersburg Times has discovered that one of the more frothing racist loons littering the comments section on its news articles with vulgar diatribes is — GASP — an elected Republican officeholder! ...in addition to the bucketfuls of hateful slop that this Pinellas County Commissioner Norm Roche regularly dumped under his brilliant commenter handle “Reality,” he also went around anonymously insulting all the local officials in his county (which includes St. Petersburg) that he apparently just pretends to work with when he isn’t feverishly spewing bile at them online.

Roche defended the comments as his free speech right and a necessity in the Internet era. He said using an assumed name removes the risk that comments are dismissed for partisan reasons.
Yes, because “partisanship” is the only reason, probably, why anyone would dismiss them.

I made the same point in a recent column here were a flash mob of conservatives descended. They swore that paid GOPer's, KKK or any other bad actors could not possibly be in CyberSpace.
It is interesting to watch the overt dumb bad actors get bounced here on the vine. Even more edifying are the cleaver one's that come and get suspended or watch the suspension of their fellows and lawyer up on the COH. Then a small miracle happens, all their posts are just barley this side of the COH.
What is really laughable is that these people like Norm Roche, think we can't see their IP address's and know who they really are. Most do not understand that in time all comments in cyberspace will be known as public information.
Their children and children's children will simply type in or say to Iphone's Siri, "Show me uncle Al's comments for 2011" and their picture and all their comments will be exposed, like Mr. Roche just discovered.
Well Cultural Terrorism never was a smart business.

Cheers, Aunk. Here's an update: the guy was on the county's affirmative action committee -- but not any more.
Norm Roche's anonymous comments gets him booted off county discrimination body
Pinellas County Commission Chairwoman Susan Latvala on Friday booted Commissioner Norm Roche off a panel overseeing discrimination policy after revelations of his disparaging posts under an online alias.
Latvala said Roche's remarks on race, gays and welfare recipients made her appointment of him to the county's Affirmative Action Committee untenable.
The low-profile panel is responsible for ensuring county agencies do not discriminate. The county human rights office, which also handles complaints in cities, reports to the panel.
"I looked at his appointments and felt his role on it was very inappropriate given his comments," said Latvala. "It looked like an oxymoron."
Latvala told Roche in a one-sentence memo: "Effective immediately, you are relieved of your duties as a County Commission representative on the Affirmative Action Committee."
Pinellas County Commissioner Norm Roche kicked off Affirmative Action Committee (This article includes a video clip, and a comment from the reporter who originally broke the story.)
"This is certainly not the conduct one would expect from a county commissioner," fellow Commissioner Ken Welch said of Roche's actions. Welch went on to call his colleague's posts troubling.
"Especially comments that tend to blanket an entire community in terms of 'thugs' or 'prostitutes' or some other inflammatory rhetoric that was used," Welch added.

I have to wonder about AmosandAndy - Sambo - InjunJoe - etc... or like a shark or reptilian frenzy. that most base part of the brain called the R-Complex, the "R" doesn't really stand for reptilian, it stands for Republican.
The reptilian complex, also known as the R-complex or "reptilian brain" was the name MacLean gave to the basal ganglia, structures derived from the floor of the forebrain during development. The term derives from the fact that comparative neuroanatomists once believed that the forebrains of reptiles and birds were dominated by these structures. MacLean contended that the reptilian complex was responsible for species typical instinctual behaviors involved in aggression, dominance, territoriality, and ritual displays.

Yes, an elected official has free speech rights. Like any elected official, the electorate takes under consideration what an elected official says while engaging the use of free speech. We don't always know the real person behind the aliases used in cyberspace but it is good and useful to know what's really on an elected official's mind when his or her cyberspace identity is revealed and we discover the unvarnished thinking that lurks behind the mask of the cyber alias.

Well I have always believed that sabotage is part of the norm.
Why do I believe this? I am an avid investor reader. I can not understand why companies suddenly fail though they have a good product? I will not go into specifics. Though there never seems to be an investigation of this.
I want a law that clearly outlines fiduciary duty of care. I think that there should be regulation of CEOs experience and directors experience related to the corporation. These people seem to have no experience in the corporations that they manage.
Then when the corporation fails, they just play the incompetence card.
Recently we see Skype get bought by Microsoft. This is a serious diminishing of competition.
What was the competition regulator thinking in the USA? FTC are in the toilet and wiping there butts for there brains.
I want this law crafted for the congress. If the congress acts in a way that harms the majority of the people. It should be impeached.
I want Obama to impeach the congress. I want the people who voted for the de-regulation have there assets seized and pensions from the government stopped.
Let them understand the savageness of poverty first hand.
The trolls I suspect are the CEOs, directors and others who are so stupid they come on here because they are too incompetent to run there companies. They know that they will be found out.
CEO pay has to be regulated and so does who can become a CEO and the chairman and CEO can not be the same person. A director can only sit on board and not give advice to another and have any association with another company.
IF these laws are passed the CEO pay will diminish because the directors will value there position more because if the corporation fails, there position ceases.

Director should only *sit on one board, directors not on boards can not sit on other corporations.

The true depths of Teapublican political treacheries have yet to be sounded and are largely both unplumbed and hidden as of yet..
Hiding behind un-American SCOTUS rulings and swaddled by multiple layers of legalized criminal behavior bad politicians, their functionaries, and co-conspirators abound. We've witnessed people who injure themselves in order to blame candidate Obama's campaign supporters; the sitting President's very authenticity constantly demeaned and slandered; any positive strategies to effectively alleviate and combat the effects of a once free-falling economy have been consistently met with fiercely cynical opposition. Finding well funded and/or pap-fed retro-populism spurred by chattering mouths both as big as Lush Rimbo's and as tiny as Norm Roche's (as well as all those in between) are the barest of scratches exposing a "conservative" ore body of dark propaganda that runs both rich and deep.
Of course there are firebrands of warped and twisted natures so wedded to the GOPbag theology that any ethical line is blithely crossed and to whom Rubicons are merely impotent tiny trickles commonly skipped over. That so many of these O'Keefe Brietbart types gravitate more to the party most openly, and often enough proudly, flying the flags of social regression and of stampeding business interests is natural. TEApublicans only care about the spinning of lower taxes for the wealthy into glorious illusiory yarns to slavishly follow and for legalized lassez-faire freedoms for businesses to use, abuse, and pollute not only this nation's actual human citizenry but additionally all currently shared fundamental devices of this nation's political engines and civic institutions.. as well as it's natural environmental endowments.
Some may see the calling out of such tactics used by the one party most and best invested in their oft and well heralded "moral" superiority as political panic. But in the end Norm Roche crossed a line that he, and apparently others of similarly everest high right-wing moral altitudes (turpitude?), just will not ever let themselves come close to seeing - and that my friends is all the justification that is needed to righteously continue pointing a public finger whenever it's required.

There are a lot of "independents" on the Vine who rabidly defend conservatives and conservative values.
I think one reason it might seem that way is the Vine starts out very Left. Look at the more popular seeds. A huge number of them are about how outrageous something was that someone on the Right did or said. So these seeds start off with "Look at what those wascally Wepublicans are up to now!" You don't see too many stories here that start off as critical of a liberal media outlet or politician, so there isn't much opportunity to "defend" them.
So context matters. People label me as conservative on here, but if you took a look at the policies I endorse (socialized medicine, for example) or even just the life I lead (why, some of my best friends are black!), I don't think you would say that. Usually, you'll find me pushing back against some extreme point of view or contrived outrage, which is the genesis of so many seeds.

If someone says they are Independant, they are sitting on the fence.
If the candidates are Rep & Dem runing for president, than the independant will vote for one or the other, hence they aren't an independant.

You're a Libertarian. And you will always vote Republican or not at all. Not like most Americans, Just diverse like all people are…
"Men by their constitutions are naturally divided into two parties: 1. Those who fear and distrust the people, and wish to draw all powers from them into the hands of the higher classes. 2. Those who identify themselves with the people, have confidence in them, cherish and consider them as the most honest and safe, although not the most wise depositary of the public interests. In every country these two parties exist, and in every one where they are free to think, speak, and write, they will declare themselves. Call them, therefore, Liberals and Serviles, Jacobins and Ultras, Whigs and Tories, Republicans and Federalists, Aristocrats and Democrats, or by whatever name you please, they are the same parties still and pursue the same object. The last one of Aristocrats and Democrats is the true one expressing the essence of all." -- Thomas Jefferson to Henry Lee, 1824.

Libertarians are an increasingly vocal ideological group in U.S. politics, yet they areunderstudied compared to liberals and conservatives. Much of what is known about libertarians is based on the writing of libertarian intellectuals and political leaders, rather than surveying libertarians in the general population. Across three studies, 15 measures, and a large web-based sample (N = 152,239), we sought to understand the morality of self- described libertarians. Based on an intuitionist view of moral judgment, we focused on the underlying affective and cognitive dispositions that accompany this unique worldview. We found that, compared to liberals and conservatives, libertarians show 1) stronger endorsement of individual liberty as their foremost guiding principle and correspondingly weaker endorsement of other moral principles, 2) a relatively cerebral as opposed to emotional intellectual style, and 3) lower interdependence and social relatedness. Our findings add to a growing recognition of the role of psychological predispositions in the organization of political attitudes.

An easy way to visualize a libertarian compared to the other 2 is to look at the 4 quadrant graph on political compass.

I've always asserted that while racists don't constitute a majority of republicans, racists constitute a far too visible minority. In addition, apparently, there is a cadre of "in-the-closet" racists in the GOP who spew hatred and piquรฉ under the protection of forum anonymity. Like the republican official who referred to black casino patrons as aborigines while wearing a wire, it's only a matter of time before the already poorly hidden racism busts out.
Perhaps even sadder, republicans know who the racists are within their midst, but in the name of party loyalty and the quest for victory, they say and do nothing in response to the racist e-mail sent by a fellow operative or the racist comment spoken "just between us". Racial animosity within republican and conservative circles continues to resemble an iceberg. There is far more than we see on the surface.
Good seed Carloz.

And if more of them did call the racists out, the racists wouldn't feel so comfortable in the party. Accurately or not, the silence is interpreted as agreement.

Absolutely - silence on something like this = consent in my book. It goes both ways with both parties.
If one cannot objectively look at the actions and behavior of Rev Sharpton and Rev Jackson over the years and describe their actions as "racist" or "based solely on race" - or one silently accepts/looks the other way when they go off on another racially motivated tantrum...well, maybe that's why the other side justifies doing the same thing.
It's all irrational fear-based (and learned) human behavior, and sickens (independent) me too. When has anyone ever seen a bunch of babies or toddlers displaying racist behavior? lol...

it's the southern strategy. the dixiecrats. we had a recent wave of dixiecrats last presidential election, but these were McCaincrats - pretenders of Democratic values, but when push came to shove they just couldn't support Obama, and say they saw McCain as being closer to Hillary than Obama, so they switched support to McCain. I was amazed at how many people told me that, and I think they somehow believed it (or fooled themselves into believing it)

Actually, sorry to say that a recent scientific study of toddlers and pre-schoolers as reported within the past 6 months in the NY Times demonstrates that children of that age naturally gravitate toward those with similar skin color and believe those of their "color" to be more friendly, sharing and intelligent that those of the others. The study showed that there is a natural tendency for children to feel a higher comfort level with "their own" and that this inherent bias is something that can only be conquered by positive experiences with those of other colors or by conditioning in the home. I do not in any way consider myself racist or biased, but this study was a real eye-opener and a clear message that, if we are truly to enter a "post-racist" era, a lot of hard work needs be done.

And you think the Democrats don't?
Actually, no I don't think the Democrats don't. Principally because the political ideology of liberals and Democrats is, by its very nature, far more open, inclusive, accepting and fundamentally non-racial than that of the Teapublikans. We are far more inclined to expose and exclude racists in our midst than are Teapublikans because we are far less hypocritical and far more true to true American ideals - including the concept of a "melting pot" society, - than are Teapublikans. And I think that history - recent and otherwise - indisputably bears that out.

Next thing is you want me to believe they are morally superior. And, just fair warning, I'll have to throw the BS flag on that...
- 9 votes
I'm throwing the bull$hit flag on the "they do it too" and the false equivalency gambit. No doubt Revs. Sharpton & Jackson have been aggressive advocates on behalf of black Americans, their activism for economic fairness and social justice is decidedly not racist and just because someone is tired of hearing their advocacy doesn't make what they do racist. The only demonstration I remember that approaches racial animosity was Rev. Jackson's stupid "hymietown" comment for which he was excoriated by liberals and conservatives alike and for which he very publicly apologized.

dwillie, and they can't understand why the majority of African-Americans aren't buying their bs. The racists and bigots have taken over their party.
Actually, Janice, all the proof one needs is to look at the most visible African-American Teapublikans. The four that most readily come to mind are Clarence Thomas, Allan West, Allan Keys and Herman Cain. Now, I cannot think of one of those clowns who has any record of standing up for his race or promoting any policies that are designed to improve the lives of black people. Actually to the contrary. Each one either avoids his blackness or is obviously self-hating by his public personna and pronouncements. They are simply lawn jockeys on their massa's lawn, and deserved to be shunned by any African-American who takes the advancement of his or her race in the face of 400 years of slavery and prejudice seriously.

I think getting a 99%er type constitutional amendment that takes money out of politics is part of the answer.

Yes. I'm sick to death of the "the left does it too mime." First of all, if it's wrong, it's wrong. So admit it and clean your own house. But the truth is, the left did all the fighting for Civil Rights, and the republicans today are doing everything they can to roll it back -- hence the push on by republicans to disenfranchise voters, especially people of color. As to the "minority" of republicans being racist -- dream on. The entire south moved away from the democratic party because of the party's leadership on Civil Rights. There's a reason why the states carried by McCain/Palin were the old confederacy. The "southern strategy" outlined by Trick Dick Nixxon is to blatantly use racism to win elections. It is the same today. There is a steady drumbeat of not-so-subtle racism which the TGOPers are swayin' too. The whole point of the Cain pseudo-candidacy is to provide a cover for it. You don't think the skin heads were following Palin because they wanted to see Russia from her porch, do you?

Look up the word ‘Liberal” It’s not a hard word to understand.
Being a Liberal is not an ideology it’s something you are, or you're not.
Being a conservative is just being reactionary.
Gentlemen:
The liberal sentiment towards each other which marks every political and religious denomination of men in this country stands unrivalled in the history of nations. The affection of such a people is a treasure beyond the reach of calculation; and the repeated proofs which my fellow citizens have given of their attachment to me, and approbation of my doings form the purest source of my temporal felicity. The affectionate expressions of your address again excite my gratitude, and receive my warmest acknowledgements.G. Washington { January, 1790}

Let's not forget the fact that the KKK was created by Democrats.
Lincoln was opposed by Democrats.
Slavery and aparheid are Democratic ideas and always perpetrated by Democrats.
The Civil Rights legislation was opposed by Democrats, and never would have passed without the help of Republicans.
Eisenhower, Nixon and Goldwater approved Civil Rights, most Democrats did not.
It is the Great Society under LBJ that destroyed the Black family.
It is the Democrats who control the inner cities where the high school graduation rates are 15-30%, unemployment is 30-50% and drugs and crime are rampant.
So to act as if the Democrats are "little angels" and "little darlings" to Black folk is a slap in the face of ALL BLACK PEOPLE.
The real Uncle Toms are Jesse High on Dope Jackson and his compadre Al the non-Reverent Sharpton. Just because the news media tell us things does not mean they are true.
Penn State and Kent State and Monica Lewinsky will forever be known for what happened.
The media covers up Clintons rapes and molestations and harassment, and then portrays Republicans as "racists".
This is about as far from the true as one could imagine.
Enjoy the land of fairy tales, spin and lies. Black Folk are not buying it!

The first "Black" president (who by the way is 50% White) has done more for white gay folk and hispanic folk than any Black folk except of course Michelle's family and friends they take on those billion dollar jaunts to foreign lands.
Obama and Michelle are never freakin seen in da HOOD! NEVER! It's bad enough that GW Bush did not visit the HOOD, even though there were no votes there, but the Messiah? The Black POTUS? The man of HOPE and CHANGE? WHen is the last time you saw a story in the Washington Compost, Chi Town Triburinal or NPR about the Obama's coming to inner city aid?
Never! They NEVER go to the inner city and be with the folk who voted for 'em. I say throw this phoney two faced liar out of the White House and get someone in there, no matter which race, who want to help America's downtrodden, be them White lower class folk in West Virginia or Pittsburg or Black folk in Detroit or family farmers in Missouri and Mississippi!
Who you white folk tryin' to fool here? Okay, maybe some of you be Black, and your pain is understood, but Barack Obama aint doing a DAMN THING for your PEOPLE. NOTHIN'

Wall Street and Global Bankers own Obama. High paid union workers and billionaires fund his campaigns, while education, health care and housing for ALL of us suffers. Third act? The most important act would be a Constitutional Amendment for a Balanced Federal Budget. In this way, the clowns, drug addicts and gold diggers on Capitol Hill will be forced to either put up or get the hell outta town.
Fourth act: abolish the IRS. Establish a national sales tax which raises only enough funds to balance the budget.
Fifth act: abolish the Fiat money system and revert back to the Gold Standard
Sixth act: get the military out of the business of world cop, re-evaluate military spending, particularly in waste, fraud, lobbyists, unnecessary weaponry and modernize the Navy and cut the Army in half size and bring the troops home from 124 countries.
Seventh act: Put a man on Mars in ten years and increase Federal spending on research by 300%. This can easily be funded by eliminating non-productive regulatory bureaucracies.
Eight act: No earmarks will be signed into law.
Ninth act: no liberal anti-American pro-Marxist judges on the SCOTUS.
Tenth act: Compulsory military or Peace Corps type commitment for all immigrants and natural citizens upon reaching age 18. 3 year commitment.
Eleventh act: Eliminate all campaign contributions from PACS, unions. Only individual citizens and limit to $5,000 per candidate per year. In addition, use FCC to force all cable and OTA TV stations to have offer 15 minute political ads for candidates in elections (after the primaries). Each candidate gets 15 minutes every six hours. There is no charge. This will eliminate much of campaign costs, leaving incumbents to perform their jobs, not spend 25% of their time on campaigning.
Twelfth act: enact a worker's rights law that allows paid vacation of at least four weeks per years to all full time employees and pro-rated for part timers.
Thirteenth act: all countries we do business with must have a democratically elected congress and abide by our labor and environmental laws. Otherwise, we dont buy their goods. If they want to purchase our goods, only non-military goods.

But the gop welcomed those Dems with open arms during the Civil Rights era, and we all know what became of the party thereafter.
The party that changed was the Democratic Party, and to an extent, the Republican party has been split into two groups ever since Reagan. This idea that Republicans are racists and Democrats are little angels is so silly it could only come from desperate morons.
The Democrats are now anti-Capitalist redistributionist oligarchs funded and controlled by globalist billionaires. The Republicans? Half of them have caved into the political correctness demands of post Vietnam politics (Democrat - Light), the other half have gone into an Evangelical state whereby the main issues are abortion and religion.
Which is better? None. Both are screwed up and it shows quite well as millions of jobs go overseas, the prisons are crowded with illegals and non-violent drug violators, the educational system is run by crooked bureaucrats, the military industrial complex drains the treasury with useless wars, nation-building and world cop bullcrap.
GW Bush and Obama spent enough money on failed bankers and Wall street frauds to provide free health care to all of our people for 20 years.
And people continue to vote for this garbage.... yes, we are getting dumber by the minute.
Now exacerbate this with a demoralized porn addicted culture of narcissism, materialism and cheating in the universities and you get a people in a state of decline.

If this person were a libertarian or socialist, would you be writing this column?
I feel a sense of hatred of conservatives and religious people, particularly Christians in most of your writings. Why are you so angry Carlos?
What causes you to focus on racism and Christianity? It appears that you are having a time with your past and need to open your mind of thoughts in a cyber psychological chat room that resides in the NAND states within digital circuits and magnetic traces in our hard drives and servers.
If you are desiring people to follow your angry rants about Republicans, Christians and so forth in order to find other dysfunctional souls with a need to explode on other people with personal vendettas, you must realize this is all in cyber space, only in computer memory.
It would be better for you to engage in these activities in a real-time face-to-face therapeutic environment with other like or non-like minded folk in order to seek the truth and find happiness you so desire.

Those democrats that started the KKK ? are todays republicans.
think of it this way , simply put , the type of people remained the same but they traded party hats.
Those Republicans that fought for equal rights are todays democrats.
a bit of history -
showing the difference between the then democrats and now. democrat then didn't mean what it does now. Same holds true for republican. Then republican were all for civil rights and equality. the roles remain the same but the names have changed. the bulk that hated and were/are KKK are still located mainly in the south and vote republican.
In Louisiana the Democratic convention resolved that "we hold this to be a Government of White People, made and to be perpetuated for the exclusive benefit of the White Race, and....that the people of African descent cannot be considered as citizens of the United States." Mississippi and Florida in particular enacted vicious black codes, other southern states (except North Carolina) passed somewhat less severe versions, and President Andrew Johnson did nothing to prevent them from being enforced.
These laws and the violence that erupted against blacks and union supporters in the South outraged Northerners who just a few months before had celebrated victory not only over the Confederacy, but its system of slavery as well. In protest of the defiant Black Codes, Congress refused to seat the new Southern senators and representatives when it reconvened in December 1865 after a long recess. Thus at the moment the fledgling Klan was born in Pulaski, the stage was set for a showdown between Northerners determined not to be cheated out of the fruits of their victory and die-hard Southerners who refused to give up their supremacy over blacks.
Ironically, the increasingly violent activities of the Klan throughout 1866 tended to help prove the argument of Radical Republicans in the North, who wanted harsher measures taken against Southern governments as part of their program to force equal treatment for blacks. Partly as a result of news reports of Klan violence in the South, the Radicals won overwhelming victories in the Congressional elections of 1866

I would have been a proud Lincoln republican...in 1860. I would have joined has radical liberal cause to challenge the conservative Democrats, the party of interposition. nullification and slavery. At the very least I would be a war democrat, those democrats in the south that opposed confederacy and slavery.
I have no problem ending voting for Democrats tomorrow, if Republicans had a more progressive planck . I would have been a republican for Lincoln Roosevelt or Eisenhower.
This is because I will walk away from conservatism, as African Americans did from the republican party when they aligned with southern conservative democrats starting in the 1930's.
Lincoln fought Intolerance, exclusivity, confederation. That was everything the southern conservative democrats were for back then, and it is everything republicans are for now. a lot of people's avatars online aren't photos of themselves or ones which they took or images they produced or are royalty-free images, so as long as the legal owner doesn't feel infringed upon (or the website the avatar is on feels at risk), it's generally overlooked.

shocking! but is this ...so called "times" newspaper is credible?...just wondering
Do you refer to it as a "so-called 'times' newspaper" for any particular reason, or do you doubt all newspapers that include the word 'times' in the names?
The St. Petersburg Times is a United States newspaper. It is one of two major publications serving the Tampa Bay Area, the other being The Tampa Tribune, which the Times tops in both circulation and readership. Based in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Times has won eight Pulitzer Prizes since 1964, and in 2009, won two in a single year for the first time in the paper's history. It is published by the Times Publishing Company, which is owned by The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a nonprofit journalism school directly adjacent to the University of South Florida campus in St. Petersburg.
[...]
The newspaper operates PolitiFact.com, a project in which its reporters and editors "fact-check statements by members of Congress, the White House, lobbyists and interest groups...."
PolitiFact.com was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2009 for "its fact-checking initiative during the 2008 presidential campaign that used probing reporters and the power of the World Wide Web to examine more than 750 political claims, separating rhetoric from truth to enlighten voters."

i'll accept the fact that someone -- even someone calling him-/herself a reporter -- may not have ever heard of the St. Pete Times, altho being from Florida, it of course seems odd, but naturally, the conservative so-called "logic" of this escapes me. i.e., even if they're not credible as a newspaper, this is stuff going on on their own comments section. it doesn't take a lot of journalism know-how to look at some troll's registration info and/or IP address coming from the county commission's office.
oh, wait; the "logic" dawned on me: by credible, could he/she mean do they lean right or not?

I do believe there is something placed in the water within the last 3 yrs. because people are crazier and crazier. They think there are conspiracies around every corner. Just look at the lies they told on Obama and anyone else they could think of. That is proof positive that this nation has lost what few marbles we had left.

A lot of this is bred on the internet. If the shoe fits:
Folie à deux (English pronunciation: /fษหli ษ หduห/, from the French for "a madness shared by two") (or shared psychosis) is a psychiatric syndrome in which symptoms of a delusional belief are transmitted from one individual to another. The same syndrome shared by more than two people may be called folie à trois, folie à quatre, folie en famille or even folie à plusieurs ("madness of many"). Wikipedia

Yes the water, they are conspiring to sap and impurify all our precious bodily fluids! Lets see the Soviet Union folded in 1989 so who are they? Hmmmm. [ fill your answer here ] I got nut'n after this.
I am often giving my onions on the Ed Schultz poll questions, and we get this real basket case, that goes by handles like "Can't Wait till 2012" "Political Spectrum" and "Hello American Kitty." The tactics of he/she/or it, is to sign up under multiple names and post as many blogs as they can, usually cut and past from Fox and other right wing sites. The comments are sometimes tweaked to fit the discussions many times not, and are always insulting. Also under the other name will actually make comments praising or reinforcing itself. I often wondered if this was just a lone individual with an agenda, or some tea party group desperately trying to intimidate other blogers and disrupt liberal and Democrat sites.

Carlos,
I don't know if you remember but a while back there was an article ripping Rush Limbaugh. At some point a troll came on. After every negative Rush comment this troll would post "Carloz is an idiot" or "Pat-#@!&!#@ is an idiot". On and on it went, whoever was bad-mouthing Rush would be called an idiot. Finally the troll was deleted but I thought at the time that it was Rush.

Hetep and Respect Pat, you were probably right. I think the drugster is many places, including under every rock.

Funny you should say that, as I thought of Rush when I posted this seed, because of the photo. All the guy needs is a cigar. LOL!

Pat, It probably was. Never have I heard anyone as fruitcake as Rush. He starts on a rave almost everyday. If he didn't fund his own network, he would have been long gone. I wish a smart lawyer for the FCC, would figure out a way, to delete his sorry ass so people wouldn't be exposed to his lies. People have said to me, when I tell them what garbage him and FAUX Noise broadcast, "well they couldn't say it on the air if it weren't true." I cannot believe in 2011, that people believe that.

who are exactly the sort of people Rush, Beck, et al love and depend prey upon. all the right-wing, pasty, basement studio dwellers need is for those people to hear what they've said once.

here we go with the home state again. i guess i should go read the article.
...
Pinellas County Commissioner Norm Roche
ah, of course. Pinellas Co, which as alluded to in the article, just had it's Bircher/Tea Partyist-filled commission -- that means Roche, but no, the tea party isn't racist -- vote to stop fluoridating their water, because as everybody knows, fluoride is a government mind-control agent.
Roche defended the comments as his free speech right and a necessity in the Internet era.
yes, it is absolutely his free speech right, but under what insanity does he feel they are "a necessity," internet era or not?
He said using an assumed name removes the risk that comments are dismissed for partisan reasons.
oh yes, i definitely believe he was worried about something being dismissed, but not completely partisanly.
Oh Florida, never change.
no, thank you. it's a long hard slog and perhaps pointless, but we're trying.

Most of your hard core racists are like that. They know the rest of society condemns their thinking, but it's like some kind of perverted porn for them to be secretly hateful.

RaisedByWolves - "They have the means to check ISP stuff or they couldn't ban them again and again"
I wonder about that too. This is a moderated forum, and I should think that with the amount of technology available to them on the Vine, that it would not be that difficult to track an individuals ISP information to see if it has been banned. When someone tries to register their ISP info is automatically checked against those that have been banned and if the ISP is in the database then their registration is automatically blocked or denied. I well may be wrong, but, it would seem that this forum software is sophisticated enough to be able to provide that capability.
Just sayin'....

Maybe, in the olden days of dialup PPP a person's ISP information was visible in the packet frame i.e. if my account at my ISP was 'bondibox@macconnect.com' they might have been able to glean that from a reverse ARP. But cable / dsl is for the most part anonymous - it's one big ethernet WAN without any login or handshake. If you're connected to their network, with one of their modems, and that modem's MAC address is listed in the first hop router, that is your authorization.
Maybe you all are thinking of the IP information, which, nowadays, is "sticky" and you tend to keep the same IP address for months at a time - if you're surfing from home. But you can take a laptop anywhere, any coffee shop, and that IP address might be used by dozens of people at the same time. It's no-go.
But there IS one thing that is distinct. It's your ethernet or wireless card's MAC address. It's hard coded into the hardware and it's very difficult to change. Granted, I could go into the room where the cable modem is and plug an ethernet cable into my laptop and switch from wireless to ethernet, and change my MAC address that way, but I will quickly run out of options.
Combining GeoIP with MAC addresses will give you a very good idea if a user is returning.

Yes, bondibox, what ever you said.(Looked like greek to me.}

MAC's are spoofable.

MAC's are spoofable.
True, but the effectiveness of a MAC spoof is mostly limited to the local broadcast domain. Doesn't an intermediary router re-encapsulate the frame? So we're back to the same problem as with IP addresses, a person can "hop" around public wifi spots when changing identities, but that's a lot of effort. If they're staying put they'll trace back through the usual routers. AFAIK you can't spoof your route.
- 2 votes
"AFAIK you can't spoof your route."
I agree with you in that, bondibox. I haven't tried changing the MAC address myself, but, I guess it might be doable. But, IMHO, the intellect expressed by those who are re-ergs does not really indicate that they have sufficient intelligence to figure out how to cloak their IP info or change their MAC. But, I could be wrong.
- 6 votes
Actually changing the MAC is a lot easier than I first thought, one command line argument and you'e there. You're right, though, and I'm probably educating them.
The thing about IP cloaking is it's really more like IP trading. The TOR application will give you a different IP address, sure, but it gives you a real IP address of another TOR user. I, for one, would never use it, because my reasons for it would be much less nefarious than the person who is now using my IP. I'd get to surf anonymously, and the guy who is using my IP gets to download kiddie porn with my fingerprint. No thanks.
- 4 votes
Also, some routers gave you the ability of assigning your own MAC to the router.
- 2 votes
bondibox - I agree...unless you are trying to be nefarious there is really no reason to do such things, but, knowing that it can be done can provide knowledge to try and track or prevent it if someone does do it for the wrong reasons. And this may happen more than most of us know.
not99center - Indeed, I have such a router, and I have a home network set up here with several other wireless computers, laptops, netbooks and other devices that use the router, and their MAC addresses are listed in the router.
- 1 vote
I don't mean entering the MACs of the devices connecting to the router, I mean assigning the MAC the router itself uses (instead of using the MAC assigned in the network controller).

Everyone has the right to make a fool of his/her self. I have even done it a time or two or three... But I have always done it with others knowing it was me. Free speech is great but do it in the open. Take responsibilityfor your views.
Granted the Internet lets us hide our names but, through our comments, not a true identity. If comments bother you, don't read them or don't let them bother you. Move on. There are more good people than there are those who find nothing in life to their satisfaction.
It is sad that some still live in the past when the White European Man ruled and all others, non-White, Non European, Women, and Children were regarded as subservient and owned. If just shows their personal insurcurites. They are to be pitied.
