While Cutting Health Care For The Poor, Gov. Scott Pays Less Than $400 A Year For Taxpayer-Subsized Health Insurance Plan

Gov. Rick Scott, a critic of the federal health care overhaul, is paying less than $400 a year for health insurance for himself and his wife.

While Scott is accepting no salary for his job as governor, the multimillionaire and former hospital chain executive chose to enroll in the taxpayer-subsidized health insurance plan offered by the state of Florida.

Scott is among nearly 32,000 people in state government who pay relatively low health insurance premiums. It’s a perk that is available to high-ranking state officials, including those in top management at all state agencies.

Nearly all 160 state legislators are also enrolled in the program that costs just $8.34 a month for individual coverage and $30 a month for family coverage.

In contrast, rank-and-file state workers pay $50 a month for individual coverage and $180 a month for family coverage. In 2010, the average American family with employer coverage paid $13,770 for health insurance. Florida also has one of the highest uninsured rates in the nation.

State Sen. Nan Rich (D) says it’s unfortunate that the governor is taking advantage of this plan while fighting to keep other Floridians from getting access to health insurance coverage. “I wish every Floridian had the same opportunity,” she said.

It appears it's not the government employee union wages which are bankrupting state governments at all. It's the virtually free health care the Governor and legislators receive at tax payer expense.

After all the stuff we've read on the Vine from people who chant about not wanting their tax dollars to go to programs for the poor, where are they on this little gem?

the average American family with employer coverage paid $13,770 for health insurance.

That's more than my son and I live on for a year. Private insurance company premiums are a disgrace.

It is time for the laws allowing state legislators, governors and members of Congress to receive health and life long pensions to be dismantled. Let Scott find and pay his own insurance. Limit terms in Congress, take away health insurance and life pensions. It is time to share in the 'sacrifice'. No longer can Congress make the laws that apply to themselves. There are drastic changes that need to be made and soon. How is the question.

Simplistic Reality

I'm a moderate conservative and its not secret, but on issues of health care and health care reform.. I think its safe to say I have a different view / standing then many of my fellow conservatives. Health care is one of the most important issues in any society. It isn't just nice to have... its a necessity. People get sick. People get hurt. People have issues. You can't avoid it. The fact that so many people can't afford health care or get health care is a disgrace. It just makes the problem worse. The only thing it causes is more people to go in debt.. not see a doctor.. let problems get worse.. and ultimately hurts everyone in the long run. I was lucky enough to find a pretty good paying job a year ago in this economy. I work for a billion dollar nation company... which happens to be owned by the Koch boys. My last union job I had 100 percent medical coverage and frankly... I kind of took it for granted. The current job I have is also Union but the company only pays 75 percent each month for coverage and has a silly cap on it. So any increases we have to eat. Just last month alone.. it went up 100 bucks a month. So we have to fork out between 375-550 per month to have non interrupted coverage. It's safe to say that the majority of us employees can't afford a hit like that. Especially those of us starting out at 15.75 and hour and don't hit full scale of 22.30 for 2 years. So most of us.. like me.. have to play the russian roulette game. Go 2-3 months with coverage.. then not have coverage for a month or 2.. because we can't afford the huge hit to our paycheck each month. That is why I'm so pro a reform to the health care system. Maybe not how Obama and the Dem's have proposed.. because since they passed there reform bill or whatever... rates have skyrocketed over it. My approach would be to model the German health care model. I believe that is the best health care system / approach anyway. A healthy balance I think would appeal to Lefties and Righties with common sense. Not to crazy Government controlled... and yet still free market.. and where everyone is covered. Nobody in Germany is going bankrupt or without coverage. I mean... that is a huge stress reliever knowing you don't have to worry about if you have coverage.. getting sick.. and getting something taken care of. I think to many American's who have the caddilac insurance plans.. take it for granted.. and can't see the bigger picture on how it effects those who aren't lucky enough to find an employer who provides great coverage.. or have a Government job. The fact that Walker.. is cutting money for medical.. but has a cushy medical plan of his own.. I find is hypocritical and selfish. Just my 2 cents. I understand cuts need to be made in lots of places in this nation to deal with debt and budget shortfalls but such an essential service such as medical should never be on the chopping block. I have the same views about social security and medicare.

All elected officials should be required to find and pay for their own insurance. Most earn plenty enough to do it. The tax-payer need not subsidize their coverage.

I'm almost at the point of agreeing to such a thing. With the salary they get.. they should at least chip in a fair amount. Especially if they get it for life.. regardless of how long they stay in office.

I agree that Healthcare reform is still needed. Obama tried, and while there is enough in there for me to stay supportive, there is just nothing to address cost except the very unpopular mandate.

Further regulation of the insurance market is needed to address price gouging. Anyone who would fight against that should be voted out.

Yes,I am a lefty. However,I'll give anyone a chance,R,D but not tp now.Whoever has some decent ideas, puts forth a plan, decent history,I'll vote for them. This POS was an instant no-brainer.Pleading the 5th 70 times while being investigated for frauding the system he seems to despise?Really? He ran a campaign basicaly saying I'll make jobs, but offered no plans, simply just trust me.Who the F votes on that? That was an out of control train barreling down a hill if I ever saw one.The SOB won and I have no idea how either.

and that is why they are millionaires...

I wonder why none of his advisors evr tell him to pay for his own insurance so when he tries to take it away from the poor, he does not look like a total hypocrite? Are they that arrogant to think that they are above everyone else? Are they that ignorant to think that people don't notice this crap?

He is entitled to this benefit - no question about that. But as a principle, he should give it up (along with all the other benefits) since he claims that Floridians need to make sacrifices because the state is broke.

Principles? In the same sentence with Gov. Scott?

AN ODE TO OUR LORD GOD!

Oh Mr. Scott.....

[Insert your religious music here:]

How I've waited to meet you. I feel it's been centuries I've searched for you. I have brought good tidings. I have given my life to you oh great lord. Will you ever have pity on me? Oh great lord Mr. Scott? I have hammered on this golden idol in your image....but no one wants to help me in my mission. To push you up through the clouds. To reveal you to the world as our one true Alpha and Omega. What shall I tell your creation to do for you? Where will we build your next monument oh great Lord?

Carlos........

Good Job Sport.

Keep shedding the light on this. Before long you will be hunted by our great lord Mr. Scott. He will hath furry on your soul. He will press you down to the pits of hell. For you bring dissension amongst his people.

I look at some of these total criminals, cheaters, manipulators and liars that are elected. I wonder how in the world citizens could be so foolish to vote for these people. I think the voting strictly on a party line is part of it. I think the people are susceptible to the rhetoric of these criminals for various reasons. However, I am beginning to think a huge chunk of it is because the voting is rigged. I just cannot believe there are that many stupid people in the USA.

This is some great information on the Great Depression I've found:

    http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/Timeline.htm

    TIMELINE OF GENERAL EVENTS

    1920s (Decade)

During World War I, federal spending grows three times larger than tax collections. When the government cuts back spending to balance the budget in 1920, a severe recession results. However, the war economy invested heavily in the manufacturing sector, and the next decade will see an explosion of productivity... although only for certain sectors of the economy.

An average of 600 banks fail each year.

Agricultural, energy and coal mining sectors are continually depressed. Textiles, shoes, shipbuilding and railroads continually decline.

The value of farmland falls 30 to 40 percent between 1920 and 1929.

Organized labor declines throughout the decade. The United Mine Workers Union will see its membership fall from 500,000 in 1920 to 75,000 in 1928. The American Federation of Labor would fall from 5.1 million in 1920 to 3.4 million in 1929.

"Technological unemployment" enters the nation's vocabulary; as many as 200,000 workers a year are replaced by automatic or semi-automatic machinery.

Over the decade, about 1,200 mergers will swallow up more than 6,000 previously independent companies; by 1929, only 200 corporations will control over half of all American industry.

By the end of the decade, the bottom 80 percent of all income-earners will be removed from the tax rolls completely. Taxes on the rich will fall throughout the decade.

By 1929, the richest 1 percent will own 40 percent of the nation's wealth. The bottom 93 percent will have experienced a 4 percent drop in real disposable per-capita income between 1923 and 1929.

The middle class comprises only 15 to 20 percent of all Americans.

Individual worker productivity rises an astonishing 43 percent from 1919 to 1929. But the rewards are being funneled to the top: the number of people reporting half-million dollar incomes grows from 156 to 1,489 between 1920 and 1929, a phenomenal rise compared to other decades. But that is still less than 1 percent of all income-earners.

More facts Concering the Great Depression at:

    http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/Timeline.htm

Time line of the Republican destruction of our economy today:

The CBO in 2001 stated we were on track to pay off our 5 trillion dollars of debt by 2012.

We got George Bush who reversed our responsible fiscal course and doubled our debt to 10 trillion before Obama was elected.

The Bush Tax cuts = 4 trillion over 10 years.

The Interest on the Republican debt = 200 billion a year.

The Bush Tax cuts and the interest on the resulting debt would alone pay for Medicare.

Medicare isn't the problem, the Bush Tax cuts are the problem.

The Reagan top rate tax cuts also cost 4 trillion over 10 years, 12 trillion over 30 years.

During those 30 years of Reagan top rate tax cuts (70% to now 35%) the Middle Class has been in decline, America's prison population has increased 6 fold, America has become more dependent on foreign oil, more dependent on foreign debt, and more dependent on foreign manufacturing.

Top tax rates President Wilson's second term = 70%.

Top tax rates under Franklin Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower =90%.

Top tax rates under Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Carter = 70%.

    Average Tariff rates 1945 to 1970 = 6%, 1975 to 1995 = 3%, 2000 to now 1.3%.

    Manufacturing was 53% of our economy in 1965, in 1988 39%, in 2004 9%.

America has a 250 billion dollar trade deficit with China, who has an average tariff rate of 25%, good for their economy!

America imports 70% of our oil needs for a 250 billion a year trade deficit in oil.

For 250 billion a year we could install a $20,000 solar panel system and a $5,000 solar water heater system on 10 million homes. Over 10 years, for the same cost as we now pay for the interest on our republican debt, we could install solar energy systems on all 100 million homes in America, and that would generate 1 tera-watt of power and free 100 billion a year that we now spend on energy bills.

We could convert current energy bills directly into a clean domestic energy jobs program by selling 30 year bonds to install solar energy systems. The power corporations could collect utility bills as usual to pay off those bonds within the 40 year lifespan of the solar energy systems.

The solar water heaters would reduce those utility bills.

If only we would spend money on our economy like we were fighting World War II, or Creating a Highway interstate system.

Government Spending creates jobs, no matter what lies Republicans tell you. America's Middle Class was never more prosperous than when we had 70%+ top tax rates and Government infrastructure spending.

    America's Infrastructure GPA: D

Estimated 5 Year Investment Need: $2.2 Trillion

    http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org

Construction unemployment is now at 13.6%

Roosevelt began relatively modest deficit spending that arrested the slide of the economy and resulted in some astonishing growth numbers. (Roosevelt's average growth of 5.2 percent during the Great Depression is even higher than Reagan's 3.7 percent growth during his so-called "Seven Fat Years!")

When 1936 saw a phenomenal record of 14 percent growth, Roosevelt eased back on the deficit spending, overly worried about balancing the budget. But this only caused the economy to slip back into a recession.

Between 1940 and 1945, the GDP nearly doubled in size, from $832 billion to $1,559 billion in constant 87 dollars. And this occurred as deficit spending soared, to levels Keynes had earlier and unsuccessfully recommended to Roosevelt.

    http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/Timeline.htm

To Rebuild the American Middle Class Dream we MUST REPEAL the Republican Tax Cut Scheme!

I suppose we can rant and rave about how those such as Gov. Scott, Walker, Perry, and other elected Republicans are bumping our heads and living off the taxpayer-funded items as part of paying for their own families' needs, despite earning a good paycheck from these same taxpayer dollars.

We see how mainstream americans are asked to accept the pain of economic sacrifices, yet nothing changes in the finances of these elected officials. They are not part of the so-called 'shared sacrifice'. They are teflon-coated.

Okay, this has been talked about ever since Obama has been in office. I wonder how the Republicans are able to convince so many supposedly outraged voters who claim to see them for who they are.......how is that the voters keep voting for them?

Somebody ain't as angry with the Tea Party and the Republicans as they are claiming to be. It appears to be the majority of the voters.

.........unless there is something wrong with how we actually count the votes.
