David Koch’s Americans for Prosperity Plays Dirty Trick In WI: Mails Absentee Ballots To Dems With Wrong Election Date - Think Progress

Koch’s right-wing front group Americans for Prosperity has been particularly active in Wisconsin...

Now, Politico is reporting that AFP has mailed absentee ballots to Democrats in at least two Wisconsin state Senate recall districts with instructions to return the paperwork after the election date.

AFP Wisconsin ballots have late return date - Politico

The fliers, obtained by POLITICO, ask solidly Democratic voters to return ballots for the Aug. 9 election to the city clerk "before Aug. 11."

A Democrat on the ground in Wisconsin said the fliers were discovered to be hitting doors in District 2 and District 10 over the weekend.

"These are people who are our 1's in the voterfile who we already knew.  They ain't AFP members, that's for damn sure," the source said.

The absentee trickery comes just as AFP has purchased $150,000 in ad time in Green Bay, Milwaukee and Madison to boost GOP candidates.

Hmmm ?? Sounds like the AFP should be charged with a crime in the very least and disbanded for fraudulent practices.

This breaks the day before the election.

The Koch Brothers have cooked their own goose.

Maybe the GOP and right wingers in Wisconsin will finally wise up and beg the Koch Brothers to NOT "help" them again. This stunt is like offering a cup of salt water to a castaway sailor.

And if that doesn't get the "suppression" job done, Poll Taxes and Grandfather Clauses will soon follow... Jim Crow USA is back...Thanks Republicans!

They must have found a loophole which makes it not exactly illegal. Amazing how laws need to be written basically to tell people to at least practice some decent morals/ethics. Unbelievable.

Surely there's some oversight entity that can come in and take care of this situation. How ironic that the GOP passed the voter ID laws to 'prevent voter fraud', then turned around and did this.

Are the Dems going to to media and are they putting up ads letting the public know about this? They should hammer on this all week.

I wonder if my dad had the GOP in mind when he told me "You have to teach people to be good, they already know how to be bad!" This appears to be another attempt by the GOP to lie, cheat or steal an election. I wonder if there will be as much outrage from conservatives over this blatant trickery from the Koch Brothers as there was over the perceived voter registration fraud by ACORN? Some how I seriously doubt it.

Looking at the mailer, it wasn't an actual ballot but an application for one. The nefarious things about them are the fact that they are to be returned to a AFP processing center rather than the clerk's office and the wrong date.

Come on Rob, prove your statement.

Wonderful.

Now the GOP/TP AND the Koch Brothers are left with NO CHOICE but to commit ELECTION AND VOTER FRAUD. Why? Because they know that on August 9th, those 6 seats that have been warming the backsides of the Republican State Senators are going to be un-assed, stripped, re-upholstered, and learning to adjust to the "sweet spot" for their Democrat replacements.

Once that happens, they can get to work RE-PEALING those horrendous policies that Governor Scott Walker put in place; AND THEN the REAL nightmare begins for him because it is going to be a long, slow, and painful road leading to 2012.

I can't believe you are still going on about this a day later, Jonathan-2055273 -- and on another seed! LOL!

Just replied, if you feel that was in insult, then please feel free to delete ALL my messages for that story.

Yeah, drama like that is always better than a simple, "I was only joking and didn't mean it as an insult." And, of course when I moderate, my intention is to really 'chastise' and make people feel bad, and not at all just doing my best to try to prevent things from getting more inflamed. We can't all be perfect like you, though, and some of us have to just accept that we make mistakes and/or get misunderstood.

Enough with the sarcasm -- I couldn't resist. Seriously, I apologize if I offended you yesterday, but you came on so strong with your reaction to a simple attempt at moderation that I was actually offended by you. And I find it incredible that you are now on another seed trying to insult me with a comment about being a moderator who can't be bothered to read. I can see that you just can't accept the fact that your joke in the context of what was going on could have been misinterpreted, and that my comment on that seed about not doubting your intention wasn't enough.

Look, if you want to talk about this some more, feel free to e-mail me instead of stalking my seeds with snarky attempts at insults. Sheesh.

The drama I was referring to was the "delete ALL my messages" line you delivered yesterday.

As for mentioning me by name, you didn't have to that in order to keep on at me about what was nothing but a misunderstanding from the beginning but which you seem to have taken as a major affront.

Maybe I haven't been clear enough with you, but I am getting real tired of this off-topic talk of yours, which is beginning to feel like harassment. I asked you on the other seed to get back on topic, and you didn't. Yesterday I said I didn't doubt you, and here today I apologized for my mistake and then asked you to e-mail me if you want to discuss what happened yesterday any further. Instead you continued to talk about it with me here. So that there is no other misunderstanding: the topic of this seed is about Wisconsin, so feel free to talk about that anywhere on this seed, but any more comments from you here or any other seeds or articles of mine about yesterday's incident will be deleted as off-topic.

What is it that Obama is doing to eliminate Bush spending policies? His and Bush's appear to be very similar. I don't see him recommending doing away the Department of homeland security or TSA or any other of Bush's spending sprees. He even appears to be in cahoots with Bush's economic hit man helicopter Ben. Just look at how similar the budget his office sent to congress is to Bush's they are almost identical.

After a quick review of added comments, I do not see reference to the addtional fact that the Madison, WI address mentioned in the flyer and ON THE PROVIDED RETURN ADDRESS is not a government office, but the address of Wisconsin Family Action.

Here is one of several articles mentioning this.

        http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/08/koch-group-mails-suspicious-absentee-ballot-letters-in-wisconsin.php

I did my own Google search and sure enough the address is for the Wisconsin Family Action office, while the return address says Absentee Ballot Application Processing Center.

Still, the excuses given just speak of the typo on the election date; I have not seen an explanation as to why the instructions were directing the ballot to an anti-abortion political action group!

Take them to the authorities, find out where the incorrect false forms were printed, verify the postage or postage permit, track down who did it and hit 'em up with the law.

The right wing does not want Americans to have a say in their Democracy, this is right wing suppression and illegally attempting to fix an election.

Better yet, send both Koch brothers to prison and freeze all assets. They've been getting away with buying elections and politicians for so long they probably don't even feel that they're breaking the law anymore. If we can get both the Koch brothers and the Murdochs indicted and jailed, just possibly we might put the fear of the justice department into all who would attempt to subvert the democratic process for personal gain and a warped vision of a corporate run America. Not since John Rockefellor has such evil attempted such a subversive political power play as the Kochs and Murdochs have.

The astro-turf vermin on the right are the real perpetrators of voter fraud. Yet the sad truth of the matter is they will not be held accountable. Only in America.

For all of the whining about supposed voter fraud by Republicans, it is they who are responsible for virtually all of the real organized fraudulent activities that I'm aware of.

All the modern day, dirty campaigning started with Tricky Dick Nixon. He sent out misinformation, smearing a Democratic female contender for Congress. He called her a Communist and said she was "pink right down to her underwear." Tricky Dick continued printing his attacks and smears on pink paper. She lost the race. Her career ended.

A message to Wisconsinites--Hang tough!!! You've got pluck!

It's time for all who use Rovian "swift boating" tactics to spend big time in prison from the top on down. Were it not for the lies of Rove, the Kochs and the Murdochs we wouldn't have had to spend eight years under W.

Until the average independent voter can understand and realize the effect that these wealthy corporate types have over their lives, they won't come forward to help create the change needed.

So how to we remove the left vs right to help the middle, the center understand and react?

        Paying Attention

Article titled: “Time is running out to vote by mail” in Hudson, WI newspaper.

        http://www.hudsonstarobserver.com/event/article/id/43935/

“On Thursday, a North Hudson resident brought an absentee ballot application she received through the mail from the group to the Hudson Star-Observer office.

It instructed her to complete the application and mail it to a processing center in Madison.

….Korson said the North Hudson woman’s ballot wouldn’t be counted if the clerk’s office received it on the 11th – or the 10th.

The city clerk also questioned the wisdom of sending the application to the Madison processing center.

….. The North Hudson couple who received the absentee ballot application with the erroneous deadline has filed a complaint about it with the state Government Accountability Board.”

That's wild. In my state, you don't get an absentee ballot unless you request one. And you have to request one for each and every vote unless you're registered permanently disabled (or similar) and THEN you have to request to be permanently on the absentee ballot list. I would absolutely report receiving one of these.

Sally - What is up with suspending GIL-2076580 for a day, for posting an informative link that is definitely connected to the topic ? Apparently, I am not the only one who has objected as many here have questioned your reasoning. I already knew something about the content of his link concerning the activities of ALEC but I had never seen the particular article GIL-207580 posted a link to. Please be more discerning in your quickness to suspend someone that is clearly not in violation of the COH ! And reinstate GIL immediately as you have been outvoted by the rest of us.

Remember the fake census forms. The Republican Party again proved it is dysfunctional and amoral. Strange behavior for a party that claims it is blessed by god and full of "Real Americans". It is blessed by a god, Mammon and most people would consider the Republican Parties "Real American" psychotic. Republicans have again proved it has nothing but contempt for the American Voters and the Democratic process.

I'm no lawyer but in my opinion, the issue is intent. This seems to me to be very similar to the robo call incident in Md for which charges have been brought against Republican operatives. Hopefully, the appropriate agencies are investigating this.

Given what we know of the Koch's practice of spending large sums of money to promote their political agenda, it may be reasonable to assume the activity that is the subject of this seed is more than an innocent prank.

At the very least, the Koch brothers are tampering with the voting process with intent to influence the outcome of a lawful election.

It seems that political dirty tricks is a peculiarly Republican activity.

        aqua surf and redphish,

Sadly, I find it necessary to modify my previous remark about political dirty tricks being peculiarly Republican. Allow me to offer a scathing indictment, backed by rampant rumor and inuendo, of Democrats.

There was a time, maybe it’s still the practice, that the dead turned out to vote in Chicago elections. Mayor Daley really knew how to energize his base.

As for alleged voting by dogs, they have always been suspect.

Bob, I would agree that in the bad old days of Chicago, there were some rather questionable techniques used to keep Daily Sr in office. And that was no better than what is going on now. However, we can't go back and change what was doen years ago but we can call out the BS that is going on now.

Aqua, still waiting for any recent incedents.

I may be the lone wolf here, but if you go to Wisconsins GAB website their press release clearly states that unofficial ballots have been sent in all districts with false information. The Wi GAB, which leans to the left, also did not point the finger at any one party.

So, before we get our undies in a bunch here, we should wait for ALL of the facts, because this tactic could have been used by both sides.
