Ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, Bennie Thompson, just wrote a letter to Peter King asking him to include other terrorists, in addition to Islamic extremists, in his fear-mongering hearing this month.
I write to request that you broaden the scope of your examination of ideological-based violence.
Terrorists of all ideologies seek to do Americans harm. According to a polling of state law enforcement agencies conducted by the Department of Homeland Security's START Center of Excellence, there are a variety of domestic extremist groups more prevalent in the United States than Islamic extremists, including neo-Nazis, environmental extremists, anti-tax groups, and others. Islamic extremist groups were named a threat in 31 states, according to the poll; Neo-Nazi groups, by contrast, posed a serious threat in 46 states.
Ideological-based violence of all kinds has been on the rise, according to a variety of indicators. As the incident in Spokane, Washington, this past Martin Luther King Day has shown, Islamic extremists aren't the only ones willing and able to utilize sophisticated devices intended to kill many Americans. In fact, three of the five CBRNE plots since 2001 were planned by white supremacist groups; none of them were attributed to Muslim extremists.
While I share your concern about the threat posed to our nation from violence borne of ideologically driven extremism, I believe that this Committee's exploration of the current and emerging threat environment should be a broad-based examination of domestic extremist groups, regardless of their respective ideological underpinnings. I hope you share my belief that in the final analysis, the ideology of a bomb maker matters less than the lethal effects of his creation.

this letter puts King on notice that his ideological fear-mongering has little to do with the real threats to the US.
Thank you, Rep. Thompson.

All of the Democrats must begin to point out the weakness and shallowness of the Republicans on every issue and get away from those petty sound byte politics.

Fed, we all need to step up and point out the weakness and shallowness of all politians on every issue and get away from those pretty sound bytes. We need to fight lies, distortion and crazy with fact and reason and damn party politics for bit. At least until sanity gains a foothold in the political process.

Any homeland security investigation by King without including these domestic terror groups other than radical Islamists is a pure political grandstanding ploy. King knows, however, that if he were to put white supremacists, anti-abortion terrorists, anti-tax radicals, and anti-immigrant vigilantes under the microscope it would create a furor among the hard core social right base of the GOP. But the fact remains that these groups have committed major violence in this country for a lot longer than the Islamists and are a much greater threat to our stability that the Islamists because they are driving a whole assortment of divisive wedges between many segments of our society.

That makes it so8und like King would want to do it but can't. He has no desire to do anything but target Muslims.

The oath of office for Congressional members:
"I do solemnly swear [or affirm] that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithful discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."
You can't just pick and choose your enemies, more than often they pick you. Our nation's enemies can unfortunately come from any nationality or race, just look at the "Jihad Jane" lady. Congressman King, let's take a good look at all our enemies, foreign and domestic. Just food for thought.

Let's face it, fascists made inroads into the american consciousness way back in the early 30's with harriman, grandaddy bush, and others. They've never left, and are conveniently hid out under the guise of conservatives and religious right-wingers. Now they've infected this so-called tea party movement, further exemplifying how a democracy becomes a fascist dicatatorship through nationalism. And although vigilance must not turn to vigilantyism, our efforts must be laser focused on outing these neo-nazis and the bigotry they espouse, which is far more dangerous than any liberal, progressive, or ficscal/social goldwater republican.
