Brazil has some of the toughest anti-abortion laws. This is the result of a very high percentage (74%) of the population being Roman Catholic and the incredible influence the Catholic church exerts on politicians. Abortion is legal only in three instances:

1. if the fetus has genetic abnormalities
2. in cases of rape
3. if the mother's life is at risk

Despite these tough restrictions, a recent study, as reported by Time Magazine, indicates a very high percentage of Brazilian women are having abortions anyway:

This is a serious health issue for Brazilian women, so they need to start treating it like one and address the situation politically. Legal and safe abortions should be a priority. Of course, as long as the Catholic church holds so much power politically, hundreds of thousands of women will put their lives at risk seeking illegal and therefore unsafe abortions. The Catholic church doesn’t care about their lives.

No they do not care.... that is why there is so much Hypocrisy within religion... and the number one reason why I stopped attending..as one of those good little Catholics over 45 years ago.. each time I've been in a church for a wedding, I look towards the giant pillars waiting for them to crack and fall on me.. lol

Brazil is also where the Catholic church ended up excommunicating everyone involved in an abortion provided to a 9 year old girl who was pregnant with twins as a result of being raped by her step-father. The church expelled the girl’s mother and the doctor who performed the abortion. The rapist? He wasn’t expelled because as always, the Catholic church has no problem with people who rape children.

There is nothing to say other than this is despicable!!! I don't know how someone could support this barbaric antiquated church!

Banning or restricting abortion does not stop abortion.

How true is this statement!!! Everyone needs to realize that we need to protect our women and they deserve equal rights to medical care. The idea that this even needs to be talked about is absolutely absurd!!! We must keep all medical care safe and available for all women in the world. The idea that someones religious beliefs could take this away from a segment of our population disgusts me.
