In a not totally unrelated matter, I just got email from the AFA:

AFA is calling for a limited two-month boycott of Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, the three stores owned by San Francisco-based Gap Inc., over the company’s censorship of the word "Christmas."

The boycott is part of our ongoing campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to put Christ back in Christmas. The boycott runs from November 1 through Christmas Day.

Those are not stores I normally shop (I'm not much of a consumer) but if the need and opportunity arise, I'll remember to shop there first in the next two months. (And of course to wish their employees a happy Chrismahanukwanzakah!)

I live out on the sticks so I probably won't see "Avenue Q" anytime soon. But back to SS, I think the diverstity that is incorporatede into SS and PBS programs in general is great. This includes the SS matter-of-fact portrayal of Bert and Ernie. To mean, I couldn't care less if they were friends, brothers, college room mates or partners. No matter what SS did over the last 40 yrs, some one was going to bend into some liberal conspiracy so I take this all with a grain of salt and a pinch of sarcasm.

Bert and Ernie = Oscar Madison and Felix Unger.

Actually it was a very tall and nasty woman in one of the hospital laboratories I had the misfortune to work in. Hated me on site. Had no friends. Thought it was her sworn duty to bust everyone's chops so they could feel just as miserably unhappy as she obviously is. It is a pity there are peeps like that in the world. EVERYBODY called her Big Bird, even to her face. She walked like that too. Think of that toy bird that "drinks" from a glass of water with its head bobbing up and down. Dead ringer.

She had a serious anger control problem and went off on everybody. A real charmer, this one. One day she ripped the head of security for the hospital a new one because she had to get her new shoes wet in a puddle. She thought they should have shuttled her personally from the parking lot. At the top of her lungs she says to this guy: DON'T YOU EVEN HAVE A BRAIN!?? Wish they would have canned her, but they sent her to anger management. She always baked nasty cookies after one of her rages, like that made up for it. Never touched them myself. Rage cookies taste nasty, I'm sure. Nope, just using this thread to settle an old score.

his regular gig on the show is foiling Prairie Dawn's attempt to introduce the letter of the day by somehow associating the letter with a cookie and eating it, OR him being on a game show wherein he has to find things that begin with the letter of the day and if so, he wins a whole bunch of cookies.

I've seen him do two songs total that are about healthy eating:

"a cookie is a sometimes food" and "healthy food"- a rap with Wyclef Jean.

as a parent and BIG TIME Sesame Street watcher when I was a kid, I really don't think much is lost there.

Oscar is still a jerk; there was recently a whole show about him spreading a grouch disease known as "mine-itis" wherein everybody got selfish, saying "mine" about everything. Oscar revelled in it and Brian Williams from NBC news was hilarious as the reporter.

he may not be as "grouchy" as he was when we were kids, but he ain't nice. Honestly, I don't have much of a memory of him from the old days. I don't think he was as developed a character back then as he is now. I think after "Elmo in Grouchland" introduced us to Grouchland USA and grouch culture more in depth, we kind of understand the whole grouch thing more and thus Oscar might be more nuanced now.

My big disappointment is the fact that somwehere between my childhood and that of my youngest brother, Snuffalupagus became known to everyone, not just Big Bird. But I guess that gag couldn't last forever, I mean, Snuffy IS the size of an elephant and had a pretty loud leitmotif to announce his presence. It really was a miracle he lasted that long in cognito.

Sesame Street, you're just not trying hard enough. If you continue with such ditties as "Cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C," kids are going to learn the alphabet instead of politics.

So does Conservative and 'C-Street'. However, kids should probably not be learning that stuff yet.

Besides, any member of the far Right in good standing knows spelling is not a requirement to be part of the club. Sending kids out to hold up misspelled signs with pictures of the holocaust has got to warp the mind.
