Yesterday the Economist.com had a brief article called, "Do we have lift-off? Which countries have launched most rockets into space?" The title was misleading, because the answer provided only reflected launches since 1999. I did a quick search on the Internet, but could not find an answer to the general question.

Do you know, or can you guess, who has launched the most since 1999? Please vote before clicking on the link below to get the answer. If by chance you have already read the article, vote as you think you would have before reading it.

I voted for the USA. As to the larger question, rather than limiting it to "since 1999," I suppose agreement would need to be reached on "since when" and "what kind of rockets."

I would have thought China because of the relative inexpensive (in comparison to shuttle programs and launches) nature of simply launching payload rockets into space.

Russia. Seems like they could be spending this money on domestic issues rather than the huge amounts they still spend on military, etc.

(Kind of like us...)

Even if you go back to the dawn of the space age, I'm pretty certain the Russians are still going to come out ahead.

I picked right. Yay. Had to be between Russia and USA. :)

I thought it would have been between the USA and Russia, too. I am a a little surprised that since the fall of the Soviet state, Russia has continued to see space as such a priority.

I thought it was the US, but figured that would not get a headline, so Russia was next on the list and that is where I voted. (Of course my line of thought almost had me voting for China.)

I'll have to remember that and next time make a trickier headline. ;-)

I guessed China -- don't know why, when I think about it...

If you rephrase the question, limiting it to commercial launches over five tons... you'll never guess!

Whazzat?? I'm talkin' countries, Carloz!

Just because you live in Spain, don't go thinkin' that Ariane is f___in' European!

Ah, ah, ah! You did not say "which country" in your comment. I purposefully used "who" in my poll instead of "country," although The Economist used the word "countries" and included Europe in its stats. OK, so now I'll guess Japan.

P.S. Spain is one of the 10 country "shareholders" in Ariane. But I was not thinking of that, but of the European Space Agency -- which the Ariane 5 is part of the fleet.

Ariane V, from Arianespace, is the only current "heavy launcher" in the world.

And despite a few figleaf percent from various countries (Spain 2%), Arianespace is still well over half French... môssieu!

Unfortunately... satellites are better miniaturized than they were a few years ago...

OK, but you still have not told us the answer to your question:

If you rephrase the question, limiting it to commercial launches over five tons... you'll never guess!

Or, are you saying it's France? (Which includes Spain's 2.01%.)

Yes, for the simple reason that Ariane V is the only launcher for really heavy satellites.

And I concede that 0.01%! ;-)

I guessed Russia 'cause the space program in Федеральное космическое агентство России Federal'noye kosmicheskoye agentstvo Rossii has gotten themselves into a situation where they have to make a profit and the Proton rocket is a dependable work horse for satellite lifts.

Hell, the Russians are sending up tourist...

Смех громк!

Earlier today I got to thinking about Russian space dogs. Everybody knows aabout "Barker" but how people know about "Blackie" or Little Star" or Belka and Strelka ? ( ... BTW, most of the space dogs made it back to Earth safely. I am wondering what is the survival rates between space dogs and space men?...)

How many of these launches involve payloads for other countries'? Except for new entries into the once much hyped "space race," is it still really a matter of national pride to care about such matters?
