Sarah Palin announced at a news conference in Wasilla today that she will resign from her position as governor of Alaska and that Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be sworn in on July 25th. She would not give a reason other than to say it was for Alaska, but the Governor said that it was a unanimous family decision.

She reportedly spoke about how various controversies, ethics complaints and the national media attention in general had been detracting from her mission to serve Alaska.

FOX News is reporting that the Governors husband, Todd Palin, told them

that his wife will concentrate on "doing the things for Alaska and the country" that she is passionate about and can not do as governor with the limitation and constant opposition she deals with within the state.

That FOX report also indicated that

Palin's decision now allows her to avoid the difficult task of running for president while serving as governor.

Palin did not mention anything about future plans, and refused to take questions from reporters.

What do you think is going on?

Very interesting development. Maybe the Vanity Fair article was the last straw.

Perhaps Alaska is tired of the lack of leadership, the media circus, perhaps the Alaska legislature said, resign or be impeached. Perhaps we will never know.Financial impropiety, pregnant, run for senator, or just going in an entirely new direction, like out of the spot light. I hope she is ok, and can get to enjoying her family and life.

There is no smoke without fire. I think there's a major scandal about her, or someone in her family in the pipeline and she is going before she is pushed. Why would anyone want to resign half way through? Any sensible and truly caring person would have finished the term, at least. I am sure when she was elected she did not tell the voters she had planned to do only a few nonths. Disgraceful!

It shows that since being elected it really has been about Sarah Palin and not the governorship, if she can take it so lightly and abandon everything midstream when the going gets tough. No one ever says public office is easy but the mark of anyone with gumption is at least fulfilling the trust that the voters put in them, not running out halfway because things have not gone to plan.

And she wants to be president? Jeez...

I doubt she will stay in Alaska. Reminds me of the Clampetts, I say she will load up the truck and move to Beverly. With the money from the book deals she can go anywhere. She even has a passport now. Maybe she wants to be ambassador to Russia after all she can see it from her backyard.

Sarah's done everything she could to stay in the headlines. This stuff about her family, victimization, blah blah blah is just crap. She knows "gosh darn" well that whatever she puts out there, be it her family or her ideology, it will result in criticism. You don't go into a presidential campaign without knowing that.

Ms. Palin would continue to put her family through the political meat grinder if it served her purposes. This is one of the reasons she put her fabricated outrage in public lately.

No, this isn't about her privacy or her family and it's definitely got nothing to do with serving the Alaskan people (although her departure could actually work out well for them.) It's about Sarah. I don't know what it is yet - I'm guessing ethics violations and a lot of siphoning state money for her own use - but that other shoe will drop. She expects it to, and that's why she's bowing out now, getting away from the governor's office in advance of the explosion.

Oh, I do. Much much much too convenient that the home was built at the same time as the sports arena. All she had to file was something saying the project (her home) was done. There were no plans, lists of contractors, etc. I wonder if she even paid for the land or if she scraped that out of the town, too.

Now "friends" are talking to the media, some saying she plans to stay active:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin plans to remain extremely visible and will give serious consideration to running for president in 2012, but has made no decision, a close friend said after her startling announcement Friday that she will resign her office.

Friends say Palin plans to spend time writing her book, which is due this fall, then promote it heavily when it comes out in spring 2010.

Maybe she's taking some time off to brush up on her interview skills. Learning the names of 2 or 3 American newspapers would be a good start.

Learning that the earth is round, not flat, would allow her to deduce that one can only see about 3 miles...at which point the curvature of the earth creates a horizon. I don't think any point in Alaska is within 3 miles of Russia (average width of the Bering Strait is 50 miles).

Remedial classes in Everything 101 would be extremely helpful whether she has political aspirations or just wants to be the best darn hockey mom evaarr!

Former Gov Jesse Ventura was hounded by the media with every sort of groundless sleazy personal attack one can imagine against him and his family. But he is not a quitter. He finished the term he swore an oath to serve and left the country for a breath of fresh air. Yes, the media uses the 4th amendment to harass, ridicule and accuse. Apparently Gov Palin was not aware of this fact either. She has much to learn.

With any luck we will never see her name on a ballot again.

Why would anyone want to resign half way through?

Because it's all about Sarah Palin. She doesn't care about the citizens of Alaska. She cares about Sarah Palin. She got a taste of the media spotlight while running for VP and she liked it. She liked it a lot. Being the Governor of Alaska is hard work and there aren't many photo opportunities. So, cut and run. And she's got a book to "write" (by a ghost writer, of course). No doubt, it will be full of her illogical, folksy musings, intended to draw controversy, and consequently, the media spotlight back on her. Based on her behavior, she has a narcissistic personality disorder and needs serious psychotherapy.

No matter what Sarah did you libs would piss and moan about it and attack her. Why? Because she had the guts to stand up for what she believes in. She also dared to tell Big Media in the USA that they were not the center of the world. But in her own way I think she has done more to show the Network TV clowns for what they are and that's good. But as for here reason for resigning, I think she probably is trying to get out of the limelight to protect here family from all the unfair and acidic attacks for main stream media and people like most of the libs posting here. If you disagree with people then they best way to deal with is is to destroy them and their families, their friends and everyone that they know. That the way of the Democrat Party and the press they control. I really thing you folks are pretty disgusting.

I guess that is a fair question but even though they may have destroyed her career and insulted her family and were able to cause her enough damage to get her to resign, that does not mean that they are correct in what they did. So in your world, if you are a big enough bully that makes you OK. Not in my world. She may have lost the Battlewith these guys but I believe she did some serious damage to the credibility of big media in the process. I know that it helped open my eyes to the fact that these people are nothing more that attack dogs for the DNC. If you want some news you would come closer to getting facts from the Globe or National Enquire in line at the supermarket.

    Does that answer your question.

I see 2 likely reasons for her resignation. A scandal waiting in the wings is one, but it would have to be a helluva big one for this to be her response.

The most likely reason I see is an intent to run for President in 2012. While critics and commentators have said this resignation kills any possibility of winning ( why would we want someone in the White House who doesn't have sense of duty enough to finish her term as governor? ), I see the woman who wondered at the hockey crowd booing her daughter ( the couldn't possibly have been booing her ) as having only a nodding acquaintence with reality and fully capable of seeing this as a good move.

VerbalRarb -- your statements in 1.29 possibly aren't mutually exclusive. Yesterday, I agreed with the many that there must be either a scandal or monetary gain imminent to provoke her decision. So in your world, if you are a big enough bully that makes you OK.

Please point out where I said that.

I think there were times when the media was very harsh with her, to a point of going overboard, but I also think there were times when she gave them plenty of ammunition. They were wrong when they "bullied" her, but bullying wasn't always the case.

I don't think she did any damage to big media - I think they did plenty of damage to themselves fawning over Obama, though.

I always thought she acted just the opposite with a "folksy" attitude. 2) Have little regard for other's feelings.--- She's too nurturing for that. 3) Limited ability in social function, anti-social --- Uh, I don't think so. 4) Exaggerating achievements---If she did, I didn't know about it. 5) Being jealous ---Who knows, aren't we all? 6) Trouble keeping relationships -- Doesn't appear to be the case.

CL1, just to be clear, I have no personal (nor non-personal, for that matter) animosity toward Ms. Palin. Her narcissistic personality characteristics have been well documented and independently observed by many people other than me (see multiple posts on this thread). I could cite numerous behaviors that Ms. Palin has exhibited that are consistent with a narcissistic personality disorder, but that would be pointless. A board-certified psychiatrist or psychologist would need to interview Ms. Palin to establish the diagnosis. I do hope that she seeks professional help to deal with what appears to many to be a serious personality disorder. Otherwise, she will never achieve her full potential as a human being.

Well, the cats hate the snakes. They are jealous. The snakes are 6 baby corn snakes, and I constantly coo at them while I'm handling them. Getting them ready to greet a LOT of public next year! So, if I have my hand full of snakes, I cannot pet cat. Ya see.

The truly funny dynamic is between the cats and the tortoises, who are about 40 pounds each and only 7 years old. I think they torture the cats on purpose - steal their beds, bump into them when they're asleep and scare the snot out of them, that sort of thing.

    Cheap entertainment!

Well, here's the abridged version. My son and I work with The Reptile Family. Hobby for me, gainful employment for him. The collection is huge, between all of us (about 8 people in the group). That's why we are doing the baby training with the corns.

Our Sulcata, or African Spurred tortoises are the third largest land tortoise on earth. Since I wound up with two males, they can easily grow to 150 pounds and live that long as well. At the moment, they are inside at night until it warms up. I especially like this because they wander into my office around noon to say "hi" before I put them outside for the day.

They will be used when someone books a "show" and wants a REALLY big tortoise as part of the bargain. Won't post link but website is ReptileFamily.com is you'd like to check out the critters (I am not in the photo, but my kid is!) under "About Us" and "The Family."

    Aren't you glad you asked??????

Sorry Carloz!!! WAY off topic! Can't even think of a "my tortoises are marginally more intelligent than Ms. Palin" to get back on track ... please forgive!

That's the scandal her lawyer is having conniptions over people discussing. May or may not be true, there's evidence it's possible, and Palin set it up (by abolishing the need for building permits before construction began) so that now there's no evidence against it.

I doubt it's something as minor as an affair. She'd turn that into a religious sermon wherein she'd actually manage to be a sympathetic character to those who are open to her. No, this is something more serious: taxpayers' money and how much she pockets. She's already shown herself to be a woman with sticky fingers, between Wardrobegate and the misused state funds she's paying back to Alaska. I'm betting my money she's ripped the people off in a BIG way. I also think that's why she wanted to be VP - bigger cookie jars.

Who in their right mind would want a job where the media perversion is to report and distort everything she or her family does ? I could not live up tyo that level of scrutiny and function normally with my job.

RFR, I do not hesitate to call a spade a spade. Unfortunatgely for you, you can not see the forest for the trees. The media, in general, serves little more than an outlet for telling a dumbed down American population what to think.

Yeah, really, let's not shoot the messenger here. The media doesn't make her stupid. She does. She called this press conference to speak to the media willingly.

As for criticism as the reason for quitting: bull! She knew, the minute she accepted John McCain's offer, that her private life would be up for public discussion, especially when she had to come out and tell us all about her pregnant daughter.

After that, we scarcely got a coherent sentence out of the woman and she never stopped saying or doing controversial things. And lately, she just kept begging for media attention.

No. The media didn't cause Sarah's problems. Sarah did. We just don't know exactly what they are...yet.

Here's what a Republican said about the speech:

"She has never been able to deliver a succinct message and this one was all over the place when this really needed to be one of her best performances," a Republican congressional official said.

"While it is absolutely true that people in Alaska were trying to tear her down with false charges, it doesn't look good that when she was faced with adversity and attacks on her character that she threw in the towel. ... She needed to go away for a while and bone up on issues. Truly bewildering."

Vwood, my advise to you is to focus on the solution and not the process. Since you can not give an intelligent rebutal, your solution is to divert from the facts. But, your pals seem to agree with you.

Ellen, that Palin was naive to big time politics was obvious. This does not make her stupid. But, with the election of Obama, qualifications to do the job became irrelvant. Yes, I do not think he is qualified to be President. I wish he had waited 4 years and this would have been a completely different story. Now, all that he does is give a good speech while someone pulls his strings like a puppet. The difference is that after 4 years, this country can be screwed up irrevocably. And yes, I will credit the media for this also.

Carloz, I do not have many supporters with your audience. But, sometimes it is good to venture into hostile territory. I think you learn more that way. But anyways, my opinion is that the Democrats in general and to a lesser extent some Republicans are threatened by Sarah Palin. Why ? If she is stupid as many suggest, then what opinion should I have of people who make fun of a retard ? What some people are very afraid of is her incredible appeal to a broad swat of American voters that are too busy with their lives to show up on blogs.

The Republicans had their opportunity and screwed things up. Now the Democrats are looking to exceed my expectations (sarcasm intented). This will lead the doors wide open to something else. The American people need something better than what they have been getting. Whether anyone can turn the frustrations of the American people into a positive force would be a difficult task. But, the media has certainly given Palin the chance to do this.

You have never seen me, nor will you ever see me, use that word about anyone. Palin does not suffer from mental retardation, which is a medical condition. IMO, she appears ignorant, clueless, self-absorbed, self-righteous and self-centered, but she has all of her mental faculties.

Obama's no puppet. Obviously (and wisely), he draws from the knowledge and views of others, but at the end of the day, he makes his own decisions. He's tackling enormous tasks and has brought a new tone to the White House - one of possibility and optimism, instead of fear and hatred.

He was well-qualified enough (remember, nobody gets presidential experience until they've been president), and he is certainly bright enough. He studied CONSTITUTIONAL LAW. She studied journalism.

He could speak about any issue off the cuff. She had to be coached, after they hid her for weeks, and she still couldn't speak to any issue without resorting to slogans and generalizations.

As for speeches, well, Palin gave good speeches, if you go for that sort of empty rhetoric. People came to the rallies to see her, not McCain. The media had nothing to do with how they appeared to us. They are who they are. I'm just glad that Americans picked the one with a brain - not the one who looks good in an expensive skirt.

Ok to be honest.. somethign doesnt smell right.
2012 is ages away.. when ever we talk abotu possible candiates this early they never ever ever actually become candidates.
her most major asset for running for president would be her position as gov.
why would she want to cut that short?
some say she didnt want to lose reelection in 2010.. but that is simply solved by not running for reelection.. no resignation needed.

She might be getting out of direct politics and try to be the face of the social conservatives.. maybe.
but otherwise this kinda doesnt smell right..
there si really no good reason surrounding the 2012 election that this makes sence.

IMO, she is not a logical person at all, but a power hungry barracuda who has convinced herself that she is doing this "for Alaska." It seems to me she has a lot more of that hunger than she has smarts.

She could say that she was attacked and that she did not want Alaska or the Governor's office to suffer. Then she could ask the people of Alaska to send her to Washington where she can fight the evil doers on their own turf. If that happens, hopefully Alaskans would be too savvy to fall for that line, but I think she may try. Look at that Gen. MacArthur quote she used in her speech: "We are not retreating, we are advancing in a different direction."

Palin is an extremely ambitious person. I can appreciate that quality (although I don't respect many of her methods). And if her goal is to run for office at the national level, that is her right.

However, if her reasons for resigning are to prepare for a 2010 campaign run for Senate, then she should have the courage of her convictions and respect for her constituency and say so. To avoid explaining her reasons is sheer selfishness and cowardice.

      Hi Carloz,

To prepare to run for senator or for the biggy in 2012. Not a chance. Resigning from the position of Governor with 16 months left to her term to prepare to run for another office. Nope, resigning like this is political suicide. Has anyone known of a Governor resigning like this because they had higher political aspirations. Does not pass the sniff test.

      I have 2 conjectures:

      1. She has big trouble coming down that pipeline.
      2. She's going to work at Fox, taking that seat next to Hannity

I think this was the worst thing she could do if she really does think she could be president in 2012. Cut and run?? She said she had been thinking about this for "a long time" and it wasn't a spur of the moment decision...did she just run for governor as a stepping stone or that "door" open up and God said don't blink?? She should have blinked and not winked. I cannot see her getting out of the spotlight, the Palin crazies will not let her go that easy.

What gets me is that the reasons she gave made no sense, how would serving the rest of her term and working for the people of Alaska be a waste of money?? Strange. Maybe more negitive stuff will be coming out.....we didn't hear that much about the affair she had with the "first dude's" business partner during the election.

I think the reason is that she can and will be a very wealth woman now. The FINANCIAL FACTOR IS BIG! No ethic violations, no restraint on where she can sell her snake oil and her sexiness with the big dose of rightwingnuttery...FOX (FIXED) NOISE...HERE SHE COMES!!!!!

      Kristol: A Contrarian Take

If Palin wants to run in 2012, why not do exactly what she announced today? It's an enormous gamble - but it could be a shrewd one.

I say she probably wants to try for Lisa Murkowski's senate seat in 2010, then later the presidency.

I believe deep down she knew she would not win re-election in Alaska thus she resigned to avoid the embarrassment of it becoming evident to everyone else.

I'm not going to try to speculate on her reasons, and frankly, we shouldn't HAVE to. She should be upfront about her reasons.

For Palin to leave before the end of her term without explanation to her constituency is extremely self-serving, no matter how she tries to spin it.

Bottom line: nobody likes a quitter.

Actually, I am rather shocked. It doesn't speak well of her character or intestinal fortitude.

If her objective was a 2012 run for POTUS, she would have been better off finishing her term as governor and simply announcing that she would not re-run for office. To quit after 2 1/2 years in her first term as governor suggests a person who cannot multitask, handle the pressures that come with the job (working with the legislature, dealing with the press, etc), and someone who is more interesting in being in the spotlight and waving to the crowds than she is in being a serious political force.

I think something is a miss. She had 18 months left in office. that would have allowed her to stay governor until 2010 and campaign for the senate. I think Alaska was turning on her. The spotlight on her during the elections brought out some inequities and abuses of her office that otherwise may have gone unnoticed by the people of Alaska.

I think she was getting pressure from within. guess we'll see.

I was really tired of the Michael Jackson marathon anyway....on to the next circus.

If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen! But I still suspect she may see this as a respite, which later she can use as a way to say she sacrificed so Alaska wouldn't suffer and now she is ready to lead the fight in Washington. I'm not saying it'll work, but that in her mind she may think it could.

What I meant by sacrifice, was that she would say she gave up the job she loved -- which is how she referred to the job in her speech -- so that the Lt. Gov could run the state without all the white noise. She talked about how Alaska was suffering with all these attacks on her -- national media attention, the ethics charges, etc.She sounded to me like she wanted to come across as a martyr of sorts.

Ah! Martyrdom it is. Even though kind of indirect. She claims Alaska is suffering because of the attacks and media scrutiny, but aren't at least some of the attacks coming from Alaska itself? Particularly the ethics issues? That's confusing enough that it spells Smoke Screen to me ... and not a particularly good one at that.

They keep leaking tidbits of her speech. She indicated that the State Democrats have been out for blood since she ran for VP. She has been the target of 15 ethics investigations, all of which have been dropped, but which has cost her almost $500,000 in defense. She also said all her staff does now is field the next accusation and no longer does state work.

It'll be ineresting to see if all the charges stop once she leaves. If so that'll pretty much validate her claims.

Just came across a missing page (I think one of the geese nabbed it) from her rambling, disjointed speech today:

As we prepare to celebrate our country's independence, Sarah Palin wishes to take this opportunity to express her great appreciation for being so blessed to be thankful for this great nation of ours....that she appreciates....and is thankful for...which makes her so blessed....to be able to appreciate our great nation...of ours...of which she is a part...of.

She also wishes to express how blessed she is to live in the great state of Alaska. After all, anyone can pet a moose, but only a true Alaskan can reduce it to a large pot of moose chili.

She is also so appreciative of all those who appreciate her family, including Trapp, Trog, Peter-Piper, Truck, Barstool, and Wallow, as well as future babies Tinsel, Teflon, and Tallow.

....that she appreciates....and is thankful for...which makes her so blessed....to be able to appreciate our great nation...of ours...of which she is a part...of.

AHHH Stop the insanity! I really tried to understand what she was saying, and it didn't make any sense at all.

Just came across a missing page (I think one of the geese nabbed it) from her rambling, disjointed speech today:

Another plane attacked by geese...........No hero pilot saved the only passenger onboard!

Hye Carolz - where was Scandal in the list of poll choices?

I find it interesting that the lady blogger that Sarah was complaining about in the made-up 'Trig photo desecrated' scandal sent her check into the state today to release the Emails requested. I'm pretty sure there is a impeachable type scandal brewing under the surface...

Sarah Palin keeps talking about her family, being talked about, she's the one using them as a means of sympathy and votes for 2012.

She used Obama joke, even though he apologized, and used the wrong words for his punch line. Palin jumped on it like a hot potato and made it all about Trig and his handicap.

Palin did the same with David Letterman joke, about her 18 year old daughter and she pounced on that, changing the whole joke around, talking about incest of the youngest daughter playing tic for tac with the media and Letterman for T.V coverage.

Palin paraded her unwed pregnant daughter on stage, when she seen that it was issues, she brought and, displayed the dad, and when people question it, she stated everyone was trying to humiliate her daughter and family. When Palin put her out their as bate, and inquiring minds needed to know, whats up with that?

Palin and her husband was the one under investigation, and who did she blame the media, and blogs for discussing her family issues.

I don't think Palin gives a hoot, about what we think. Recognition is important than family and friends, if you read about the rise of Sarah. Palin does not believe in country first, its Palin first. If she constantly lies about something so petty as a bridge to no where, and stuck to the story, when it was disputed it, she'll lie and hide just about anything.

She has seemed to parade them about quite a bit.
