White Supremacists May Attempt To Co-Opt July 4 "Tea Parties" To Promote A Hateful Agenda

advertisement

White supremacists and neo-Nazi hate groups plan to take advantage of the anti-tax "Tea Parties" set to occur in more than 1,000 cities and localities over the July 4 holiday weekend to disseminate racist fliers and other materials and attempt to recruit others to their cause, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

ADL's Center on Extremism, which monitors extremist groups and provides information to law enforcement and the public, has released information on its Web site describing the attempt by white supremacists to co-opt the anti-tax message of the events as a means to spread racism and anti-Semitism.

From the article linked to in the excerpt above:

Billy Roper, who heads the white supremacist White Revolution group, based in Arkansas, is listed as an organizer on a Tea Party movement Web site. In a June 2009 post to the White Revolution blog, Roper claimed to be organizing a Tea Party in Arkansas and sending White Revolution "representatives who will be witnessing and converting lost souls at Tea Parties from North Carolina to Arizona." [emphasis in original]

A May blog post revealed that White Revolution members will attend local Tea Party protests and distribute leaflets and flyers. Their goal will be to "educate, activate, and recruit." The blog post encouraged readers to "plan to attend one to do your part for our race and nation!"

What are Tea Party organizers doing to condemn this effort, and prevent it from happening?

They will do nothing to condemn this effort and prevent it from happening. They will stand there happily while the crowd around them holds signs that have racist and extremist messages on them.

Thanks for the links, Redsfan. It was good to read the following:

California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring today strongly condemned the use of anti-Semitic material used to promote the recent April 15 TEA party in San Mateo County.

To re-pose the question I asked above, is anything being done in advance (as opposed to condemning afterwards) to tell racists, anti-semites, etc. know that they are not welcome at these events?

Sorry, Carloz...I've looked and looked and can't see anything where tea party organizations are telling racists to stay away. I think they want numbers attending so they can claim that "most" Americans are against President Obama...and they don't care whether those numbers include racists.

Although I do not agree with any group that is based on hatred of color religion etc. it is sad to see the double standards of liberal democrats. They could easily turn their heads to Obama's church and yet call out a white supremacist group that is attending a tea party. It is disappointing to see the double standard going on here, I do not agree with either group and yet the dems seem to not care about a Church and outraged by people attending a rally. Also the tea parties are not to promote a hateful agenda, they do not want their taxes raised to pay for the increase in spending. I never saw liberals speaking out about supremest that support their party when they should have or the fact that Obamas buddy is Bill Ayers. The white supremest are not speaking at the rallys and are attending many hateful groups attend many gov. events and yet you take no initiative to condemn rev. Wright or Ayers or many other hateful groups that speak for Obama. In America how can they tell a group of people to stay away that have not broken the law without being sued? They are not speaking at the rallys so i do not think that they could turn them away. Sad to see the double standards speak out against both not just one of the hateful groups.

Sara Palin hangs out with drug addicts, found guilty of abusing her power, supports teen pregnancy, associates with known drug dealers and convicted felons, supports DUI.

There ya go the Palin Single Standard. BTW White people attend the church you mentioned.

What, if anything, do these 'tea parties' accomplish, aside from bringing attention to a segment of society that can't seem to grasp concepts like cause and effect. Much like their hero Pres. Bush 43.

If this were the 1930's, they would be raving against FDR and the New Deal.

The only way I'll ever vote Republican is if they find a way to resurrect Abraham Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt.

When Rev Wright yelled out in his church, "God Damn America," the larger message of his homily was to protest that America is not the Land of the Free. While the U.S. guarantees many freedoms, many people are still repressed racially and economically. As for Bill Ayers, he is now a college professor and no longer a Bomb Throwing Radical. If you want to look it up, Ayers was never convicted of any crime against the U.S. for the alleged Pentagon bombing.

White supremacists generally promote a "No People of Color" agenda. Not a really great message to preach in the Land of the Free.

Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves. A. Lincoln

Still a double standard, don't speak out against extremist groups that do not support your party and then defend ones that are in your own party. I am not for any type of hateful group and yet you defend the hateful groups in your own party and condemn ones in the other party. They are not preaching at these tea parties they are merely attending. Bill Ayers is still a radical and you need to do some research on these types of churches before defending them. The Church's mission statement is based on black liberation theology. None of you have posted any information or facts, Bush had an approval rating of 30% when he left office, this should show you that many republicans did not get exactly what they wanted.

Nice spin, DJ, but you are wrong. When Rev Wright said, "God damn America", he meant he hated America. Remember he also said USKKKA.

As for Bill Ayers, he is now a college professor and no longer a Bomb Throwing Radical. If you want to look it up, Ayers was never convicted of any crime against the U.S. for the alleged Pentagon bombing.

Bill Ayers wasn never convicted based on a technicality but that does not mean he was not a domestic terrorist before. He himself admitted in setting up bombs that killed and wounded people.

JessicaF, I'm just trying to understand what you are saying. Can you clarify? I think you are saying its ok to allow people who's agenda it is to repress a certain group or groups of people, to deny these people rights, and legally have the right to treat them as second class citizens, to have a free, unhindered voice, free from the repression of groups who do not advocate a superiority, but an equality, free from the tyrrany of having to treat everyone else with a certain level of decency, and having legal limitations to their ability to persecute and act violently toward people of color and or jews and or gays?

You are saying its not ok to speak out against a group of people, who only want the right to speak out against other people.

Lets be clear, sitting on the board of a charitable organization does not make you "pals" i am not friendly with most of the people I work with outside of work. Ayers is now a college professor, he is no different now than any christian supremacist (abortion bomber and praiser/inciter thereof) preacher who has gone to peaceful ways and now teaches at a baptist university. The whole Ayers thing is so old and ridiculous. Enough.

As for your take on black liberation theology, I added emphasis to illustrate the difference; Ready? ok: White Supremacist, Black Liberationist see the subtle difference? Those words mean very different things. We liberated the slaves under lincoln, yet it took until the late 1960's to then get rid of segregated society. Those people have a right to be pissed off. It has not even been a generation since segregation ended.

As much as white supremacists have the right to say whatever crap they want short of disturbing the peace, inciting to riot, etc, so does everyone else have the right to tell them to shut up. It doesnt mean they will listen, but we have the right, we will use the right, and we will tell them, shout at them, scream at the top of our lungs, that we dont want to hear their stinking filth, and we want the haters gone more than they want to get rid of the blacks.

This is america, the land of the free. The greatest nation on earth, white supremacists, if you dont like it, leave.

The difference is this Jessica. White supremist groups are in direct opposition to our constitution. They have a long history of violence against people of color. Bill Ayers was a 1960's anti-war protestor. Rev Wright has little sway over much other that his congregation and the one fateful sermon out of 10's of thousands he preached, is protected by free speech. Those that provoke and comit hate crimes are not protected and they are coming to a Tea Party near you.

Did you read the two articles -- the one seeded and the one linked to in the seed? Click here and read the details about these organizations: Stormfront,Tea Party Americans Coalition, National Alliance, and White Revolution. Google those organizations.

What about this article about yesterday's Tea Party in Conyers, Texas:

At Texas Tea Party, Joe The Plumber Recommends Forced Deportation of Immigrants

WTF? Is this an illegal immigration protest or a tax protest? Then there is the photo of the attendees carrying the sign saying, "End it all now! Show us the Birth certificate." Watch the video (if you can stand Wurzelbacher's droning on continuously) and look at the anti-Obama signs. Yeah, it's all about taxes -- nothing else. Oh, and it is non-partisan, too. NOT!

Please show me what the hate groups have been doing at these rallies and then they can be condemned if they do something illegal there.

Well, now it seems you are raising the bar, and saying it is OK to pass out racist material or recruit people to hate groups at your Tea Parties as long they don't break any laws. It is not illegal to spread hate and misinformation.

Jessicaf, we will just continue to disagree, so let's leave it at that, OK?

Don't avoid the problems of the country and how to get back on track by following an agenda. You all seem to be very ignorant in our problems and it is easier to blame one party as opposed to wanting all around change. Both parties need to shape up and to serve the people of the US. Your talking points have not changed anything and will only make our problems worse, your statements have no impact and our gov. officials would rather divide us and fight than to change. Jessica, if I may attempt to answer your question, how tax and spend is supposed to help the economy. When you put it that way, its an easy "it doesn't" but its not at all that simple. Taxing and spending are necessary components of any government (stop lights, police, military, etc. The stimulus package was supposed to invest money into our national infrastructure and at the same time create jobs in industries that we will need in the future (so called 'green jobs', etc). Some of your post I agree with, but it seems you just don't like what the money is being spent on and who is spending it (obamanator). Well, join the club, I didn't like how GWB was sending my money overseas to kill people who never did me any harm. Now the president is spending money here, to improve life here, to create jobs here. Why do you complain now? Why not before?

No we should not be borrowing at all, that will keep the US in ruin, we are expected even with the tax changes to double our debt to 20 trillion dollars by 2015. We already spend about 400$ billion dollars a year to pay off our debt. You realize that the 2010 budget has increased spending in military and just about every other sector. I do not feel that it is citizens responsibilty to pay for most of the spending that is going on. I was opposed to the increased spending and growth of the gov. when Bush was president as well. Our gov. has doubled it's spending in the last 50 years compared to GDP. It has jumped from 5% in 1950 to 10%+. Our gov. has increased wastefull spending by bailing out companies, banks, etc. Our taxes that we pay are being wasted rather than helping to get this economy back on track. If both parties were more into serving Americans as a whole rather than trying to get votes and listening to lobbyist then our economy would be headed in the right direction.

        Jessica,

Maybe if we return to the tax rates of the 1980s and start taxing the wealthy an extra say 5% we can turn things around. The top 1% payed about 71% taxes under Richard Nixons Admin. so how is Obama asking for 39% for anything over $250,000 outrageous. It isn't! If you want a functioning society it takes taxes. I would think the last decade would have been a wake up call. As we deregulate and let capitalism run it's course without controls we get bank collapses, when we turn over military contracts to private corps. we get soldiers dieing in the showers. The idea that everything should be market driven is ridiculous. We need Government and we need to fund it. That takes Taxes , I would just like the wealthy to pick up their share.

        SPG64,

Maybe if we return to the tax rates of the 1980s and start taxing the wealthy an extra say 5% we can turn things around. The top 1% payed about 71% taxes under Richard Nixons Admin. so how is Obama asking for 39% for anything over $250,000 outrageous. It isn't!

Obviously, you have missed the economic trends of the past 30 years. Taxing the wealthiest just because they can "afford" it removes the incentive for the wealthiest to invest their money and create new jobs. Besides, you DO NOT increase taxes in the middle of a recession.

The 39% tax rate you mentioned is only for the federal level. If you add the state tax plus social security, Medicare, etc., the total tax rate will be more than 50%. At this point, you are paying the government more than 50 cents for every dollar you make.

You also incorrectly assume that those earning $ 250K (disclosure: I am not one of them) are Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Most of these are actually doctors, independent contractors, etc.

The overwhelming majority that will get hit with the tax increases are the small businessmen or entrepreneurs. Starting a business is already an overwhelming endeavor. Penalizing risk-taking will mean less businesses therefore less jobs.

Why should a small-time businessman/woman invest his/her life savings to start a business if Uncle Sam will take more than half of what you will earn at the end of the day? Remember than small businesses make up most of the new jobs created over the past two or three decades.

If you want a functioning society it takes taxes.

Yes, but at some point, taxes become a disincentive to start of business or earn more.

As we deregulate and let capitalism run it's course without controls we get bank collapses,

Nobody is advocating capitalism without controls. But a capitalist system with too many government rules or threats (i.e. class-action lawsuits) is not good either. One of the reasons for the bank collapses is the Community Reinvest Act which forced banks to make home loans to unqualified people at the risk of government sanctions.

when we turn over military contracts to private corps.

The government spends thousands of dollars to train a single soldier. For the military to ask this trained soldier to peel potatoes the whole day long is a waste of money. Preparing food for the soldiers is best left to the private sector.

we get soldiers dieing in the showers.

Uh, sources? And what does our tax rates have to do with this issue?

The idea that everything should be market driven is ridiculous.

A lot of the functions of the government are not and should not be market driven like the police, customs, justice system, etc. Nobody is arguing they should be so. However, most of the things that you and I need are market-driven. The clothes that we buy, the food that we eat are market-driven.

We need Government and we need to fund it. That takes Taxes

What we need is limited government not big government. Why should arts funding be part of the government?

I would just like the wealthy to pick up their share.

The wealthiest 10% of all taxpayers already pay half of all taxes.

          X,

I am afraid you are the one who has missed the trends of the last 30 years. As taxes for the rich or the investment class have dropped so has the number of decent paying American jobs. More and more corporations have moved their operations abroad instead chasing cheap labor. So please don't drag out that tired ridiculous lie about lower taxes being good for our economy.

Second to those of us making less than 100K or so social Security and Medicare take a serious percentage of our incomes. However those contributions are capped so the guy making 25million for bankrupting the banks is paying a pittance percentage wise.

Third the idea that most of the people effected by the 250,000 tax increase are small business people is a lie. Even if it was not a lie, we are talking about a 4% increase for any moneys over $250,000 this is not going to collapse anyone's business. Further it is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard to say that raising the taxes on income over $250,000 will extinguish the American work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. Complete rubbish!

Fourth what do you mean no one is advocating capitalism without controls. That is exactly what the Republican Party has been advocating pretty much from it's inception. Once again I must use the word rubbish when it comes to your statement about the Community reinvest Act. Its impact was nothing in comparison to the deregulation that had been going on since Reagan.

          Fifth,

Again I say you are the one missing the point. Not every person in the Military need to be combat soldiers in WWII only 1 in 27 US soldiers were actually combat soldiers. The only thing that happens when we privatize these positions is we lose control over these positions and things like soldiers being electrocuted in showers becomes just part of doing business as corporations cut corners to make a bigger buck. The only ones that really benefit are fat cats like Dick Cheney suck huge CEO salaries of the top.

Sixth so if we do not tax our citizens how do we pay for those services that are not market driven. All over the country our infrastructure is crumbling, they are laying off teachers, firefighters, police officers because the government does not have the money to pay for these services. We need taxes the question is who can best afford to pay more the working classes or the wealthy.

Many would in fact disagree, but thats what make our country great.

I think some people we neither hugged enough nor spanked enough as children, and need human touch as they have become dysfunctional adults. And by human touch I pretty much mean with a fist.

At some point, we will realize that trying to educate people bent on hate and genocide, racial purity, etc, at some point we will realize that silent protest is not going to work with these people. Logic is not going to work.

Just because we're rational and compassionate people doesnt necessarily make us meek. It doesnt make us liberal weinies, unless we fit ourselves into that stereotype.

I mean, yeah i am proficient in excel, I have a pretty good vocabulary, I can set up a network printer, etc but its not like revenge of the nerds over here. Im sick of being pigeon holed, and I think it takes guys with a swingin ______— once in a while to break a stereotype.

I know there is truth to the theory that Violence begets more violence in many applications of the theory. But, could it also be theorized that in some instances, submission begets more submission?

Often, I do try to make light of situations with humor, but frankly, Im not trying in this statement.

The teabaggers are a bunch of white supremacists anyway. The only reason they decided to start doing the tea parties was because Obama got elected. They were protesting taxes before Obama raised them. This is purely a stunt because they're angry that a Black guy got elected. Obama has not raised taxes yet. If McCain had been elected they wouldn't have protested on tax day or july 4th.

These neocon radio sheep are brainless drones. They're not free thinkers, they follow rank and file behind Limbaugh and Hannazi. LOL they even believed that Palin was less of a socialist than Obama, I mean the girl that literally gave rebates from oil revenues to every citizen of her state.

If "their guy" had been in office they wouldn't want to make him look bad. Same as they didn't protest taxes under George Bush even though the tax rates are still the same as his. So even though the tax rates would be the same under McCain they wouldn't have protested. What a bunch of fools. These are the same people that threw/planned pro-Iraq war rallies before the war even started. If they had waited until taxes were raised they may have some ground to stand on here.

This has been a problem since the start of the tea parties. The event organizers were too nebulous and non-specific with their message. They wanted to keep it broad to attract a large crowd, because that makes their message look stronger. But in doing so, they left it open for groups like this to use it as a platform. It's a shame, but they really have no one to blame but themselves.

You need to do some research, although I do not agree with any hate goups the point of these groups is to protest more taxes from increased spending. The tea party events are not white supremist preaching idea or view points but more the idea of less wasteful spending. The more we borrow to spend the higher inflation and the longer our economy will take to get back on track.

I do not think the wars were unnecassary, also Obama is proposing to increase spending on the military for 2010, I bet now you can look the other way. We were attacked over 5 times when Clinton was president and it was never handled the final straw was 9/11 since then we have not been attacked. Iam against any type of wasteful spending, go through the stimulus bill and you will see that most of it was to expand the budget in places that we had financial shortfalls. I was not opposed to a stimulus but that amount of money needs to be handled with caution and not just thrown around. Also we need longterm jobs not just short little projects. We needed to focus on our economy as a whole. So you are for wasteful spending but not when it comes to the war. I am against all wasteful spending earmarks, etc. I also am against going into debt, this just weakens our dollar. However you were against it when Bush was president but for more of it now because we have a liberal president. The double standards you have are endless.

And the divide widens.. Hopefully we won't see any violence on this important holiday.

This type of hatred will never move this country forward.

Ah! There's nothing like the Christian party! O'Reilly, Hannity, and Boss Limbaugh will be overjoyed..on the inside. On the outside they'll be tsk tsking while making sure the cameras are catching all.

Those crazies. As if neoconservative hijacking weren't enough.

Forget them, this is the real tea party

Divide and spew hate. Political correctness does not apply to racists and or bigots hiding behind "patriotism". It does not matter it comes from the right, or the left.

The only thing I'll be dividing on the Fourth while I celebrate the anniversary of this great country of ours (even with all her faults and racists and bigots) and pausing to remember those who defended her through all the years (men, women, black, white, Democrat, Republican) will be my blackberry tea marinaded baby back ribs.

And I assure one and all my flag will be flying hot, straight and normal, to remind all those who protest for change and to remind all those who are currently the focus of those protests that my flag flying up right and proper represents the America I want to protest for, not some skewed image from a racist or bigot.

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Ben Franklin.
