On Tuesday the Drudge report ran with the headline, ABC TURNS PROGRAMMING OVER TO OBAMA; NEWS TO BE ANCHORED FROM INSIDE WHITE HOUSE, and reported the following.
On the night of June 24, the media and government become one, when ABC turns its programming over to President Obama and White House officials to push government run health care — a move that has ignited an ethical firestorm!
"Finally," I thought, "a news organization willing to allow the Democrats a little of the 'fair and balanced' reporting that FOX always gives the Republicans." You know, things like claiming to base reports on its own research when it really comes from an official party document, running polls asking highly relevant questions like,
"Do you think Rush Limbaugh is still sneaking Viagra?", astro-turfing a new left wing protest effort so that it appears "grass roots" effort, and maybe a commentator or two emulating GOP leaders setting fire to Americans. You know, HARD HITTING NEWS! One night is not much, but, it's a start.
Imagine my disappointment when I learned that this was just another controversy manufactured by the RNC and promoted by Drudge, et al, -- and that in reality ABC was only presenting a one hour-long special on health care reform from the White House East Room. Drats!
But then I thought, "Hey, for the airwaves to truly be 'fair and balanced' why not allow one of the other networks to serve at the whim of the Democratic Party, just like FOX News and the GOP?" It may not result in better news reporting, but it certainly would make for great entertainment. And isn't that what "news" is supposed to be about?
