One of the most popular internet websites is classmates.com. It reconnects people from high school.
One Westside High School graduate has joined as the newest member but someone murdered Mary Cronin 17 years ago.
You've seen the old embarassing high school pictures. Ads for classmates.com, promising to reconnect you with high school friends you haven't heard from in years. For many, It's an innocent walk down memory lane. Remember him? Whatever happened to her? But recently, a communication to graduates of the Westside High Class of 1983 went from innocent to sinister.
An email is showing up in the members' inbox's. The subject line says "Remember Mary Cronin? Say hi to the newest class of '83 alum to join." Thing is Mary Cronin, class of '83, didn't make it to her ten year reunion. Someone murdered her in April of 1992. Her killer has never been caught.
...classmates has taken Mary Cronin's profile off its website. But it didn't say if it will make any changes to how it checks out the people registering on its site.
To find out who signed up under Mary's name, will take a court ordered subpoena. Some of Mary's classmates are thinking of filing a complaint with the Attorney General.
Eerie storry. If you want to see the video report, here's the link:
imho It's just classmates.com picking random names for their spam and lying in their advertising to suck you into joining, and they are getting caught in their lies.
I have received this kind of unsolicited spam
imho It's just classmates.com picking random names and lying in their advertising to suck you into joining, and they are getting caught in their lies.
Wow, I'd never thought of that as a possibility. With the general lack of business ethics that exists, I'm sure it's a possibility.
My husband belongs to classmates.com and he gets the same kind of random emails, almost as if classmates.com has a laundry list of names of people who graduated from the same school you did. I hope no one is impersonating Mary Cronin but if so, I hope they're caught and given a full measure of justice. That's a mean thing to do.
I'm sure it was distrubing to these people since there's a chance it could be her killer.
I'm sure it was distrubing to these people since there's a chance it could be her killer.
It's distrubing on several levels, but that's probaby the creepiest, Scott. I'm sure they must be wondering things like, "Is it a taunt from the killer or a warning that he/she will strike again or what?"
Ran across the story in my nightly read. I do wander if the person who posted this is doing so in memory of her. It has been 17 years and still unsolved. Though the posting was done in a sinister way it hopefully has provoked enough anger and feelings to cause a closer look. Many things change in this length of time. We have advanced so much in technology, we may already have the killer in custody. Stiring the "pot", may force authorities into taking a closer look at the old evidence and finding closer for many -- especially her family and friends.
1.5, 1.6, 1.7: all very true. Situation needs to be thoroughly investigated!
Carloz:
One has to wonder if indeed this is her killer whether the choice of classmates.com indicates that he or she might stalk and try to cause injury to someone she graduated with. I would have expected classmates.com to be more forthcoming with information, practically volunteering anything they have to the police since the more panic this causes and the longer that the perpetrator is at large the longer they will receive negative press attention.
How about this for a twist that it is actually her and theier Identification of the remains were wrong, that she had decided to disappear at that time and now wants to resurface.
KJ:
That would be pretty wild.
There are so many possibilitites! No one's suggested a supernatural cause yet, and I don't think that's it, but I wonder if any of her friends thought that. I'm sure it felt spooky to get the email. Spam from Classmates.com would be the least weird, I suppose.
Carloz friends request being sent
Accepted! Thanks!!
It can be anything from the murderer to someone who wants the case reopened to a sick individual. I think what strikes me most is this may be just the thing to reopen this case no matter who did it or why. If anyone thinks they can anonymously do this they are wrong and I suspect the website in cooperation with the police may just have the the poster's identity very soon. At least I hope that is the case.

It sounds like that will only happen if some of the people who received the email file a complaint with Omaha's Attorney General and then get a court ordered subpoena. I hope that happens.
Interesting. My question on that would be whether or not the police reopening the murder case changes that. I'm with you in hoping they can reopen it. It would be outrageous if this was ignored. There must be more than a few willing to file a complaint if the police cannot investigate without them. I sure hope as this story unfolds we all get updated on the conclusion.

Me, too, Norcal. I will try to keep an eye out for developments.
What I find of interest is that the I.D. theft of someone who is deceased needs a court order for these people who they protecting ?
I could be wrong yet I.D.Theft is a crime should not that website be required to send all information to the State A.G. to forward for investigation ?
Granted it just may be the sick joke then again it may be a bragging killer : (

I don't think this is a case of Identity theft or the criminal would not be signing up for a class reunion of the person whose identity he is stealing. This is much more complex I suspect. However the police have to gain the information I am pretty sure they will do it.
Norcal so its okay if I can claim to be you and say vile things on the vine while they do not bother to follow up or release my information to you or police without a court order I give where you live out on the vine as well ?
BTW if a mob shows up while awaiting that court order ?
I.D.theft is a crime its costs are just more than money as this story shows it brings mental pain an more ?
In the meantime if it was the killer they could have gone from the country by then ?
Undique Venimus
No no no I am not saying anything is ok. I am only pointing out that this does not appear to be under the known category of Identity Theft for profit as the person would not be signing up for her class reunion.
As for whether law enforcement must get a court order or not, as with all things there are laws that they must follow but I am absolutely sure either way is no problem for the police department. They do a pretty good job of investigating crimes either locally or on the Internet.
They will uncover the mystery with whatever procedure they use that has thus far been pretty good in most cases.
Norcal I.D. Theft is on the rise for deceased most times profit is envolved direct or indirect, this comes under the heading of other as its still a crime, such as a SSN,keeping a phone, home, rent and electric.
Those few above bring in no profit yet allow people to use services from them or in the case of SSN to stay hidden as an illegal {not all work family member to drive}needs that, so its not just money/profit even if the least percent it is a crime doing so under false pretense entering into a contract for service ect..
Undique Venimus
I agree but this is a stranger issue than any of those categories. And indeed even in getting a service they are gaining something. This seems much different. It could very well be the killer. Seems more like a mental issue or someone wanting to bring attention back to a closed case, well meaning or not. I hope it turns out to be the first real clue toward solving this terrible crime. Granted it is a moot point we are discussing as Identity is obviously taken but this is just too weird to be what we know as Identity Theft, the crime for gain.
Deep grey areas Norcal2 and I forgot revenge/vengance {like I'm gonna git ya fo disagreeing wit me} kind of floks ; }
Undique Venimus
LOL. Hey we play for the same team...we are all bothered by this and hope something can and will be done!
;-)
Yes I feel for the {family} & friends having the scab torn off like that : (

So, ID Theft is only a crime if the theives steal something or do it for profit? What if they just do ugly things under your name? Or in this case, simply pretended to be someone they were not? Isn't that at least fraud?
Good question. I looked it up on Wikipedia and it looks like Identity Fraud has it's own description as well. Looks like Identity theft requires gain but fraud doesn't if I read it right. Either way I'd bet that if someone is playing at the expense of loved one's and if any crime can be charged it will be. My money is bet on the Police.
It may be Identity Theft or Fraud or something else but it is a really odd and disturbing situation and I hope they solve it. As PastNikeVet said, this is a scab torn off a family. Very sad.
Thanks, NorCal. I use Wikipedia, but sometimes overlook it. Yeah, this must be painful for the family. If the friends who received the email don't take action, perhaps the family will.
I don't know for sure who could have done this, but if I were in Law Enforcement, especially any who worked her case, I'd be jumping on this as far as it had to go to find out how it got posted! It was weird and scary to me that the first thought I had of it was that it was her killer, taunting. Killers can be psychos.
Human beings are just a sick lot sometimes.
Yeah, it could just be a sick joke, not necessarily the murderer.
If you host a website, especially one with a huge database like Classmates.com, you can't be expected to check everyone who signs up. On the other hand, the site could and should provide the information on who did this to the police WITHOUT a court order.
the site could and should provide the information on who did this to the police WITHOUT a court order.
Besides being the decent thing to do, it would also make sense PR-wise. And if Classmatesd.com has a rule against releasing such info without a court order, why couldn't the company seek the court order?
Yes PenniD I agree with all and if you think about it when its going after perveyers of kiddie porn they have no requirement so why should other crimes commited get a pass an require a court order ?
Undique Venimus
I'm going to post this to the law group to see if there are any lawyers on the Vine who could address this.
Carloz > Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Nooooooooooooooooo well there goe's this thread LOL : )
Undique Venimus
Now, PNV, we luv our Newsvine lawyers.
Carloz being the worst newsvine Judge my question is why did they fail to show up for Brian Fords trial for bee hoarding ?
Judge PNV ; }

Classmates.com should just give the information up to the police and protect their integrity... if not, everyone who is a member of Classmates.com should cancel their membership as a show of solidarity against sick people who sign up under a person who has been murdered.
They can't release anything imho....see #1.2
I'd cancel my membership, but no way would I join -- I hate their #@#$ emails and popups on my web pages! Okay, I also am too old to remember who I went to high school with. (LOL)
Hey, PenniD, I've always refused to join them, too. Anyone I want to be in contact with from high school, I am already in contact with.
Hey, finally some news from where I live! Too bad it's not good news though.
The Omaha metro area is getting worse and worse as each year passes, the election this year is centered around the increasing crime rates :(

Sorry to hear that, IHNC. I've never been to Idaho, but know people from there or who have lived there and have always heard how nice it is.
Are you familiar with this High School or the murder case? Is this story getting much attention there?
I've been to Westside several times, but I've never heard about this until now
I Have No Creativity :(, My apologies for the Idaho/Nebraska mix up. I was thinking of people I know from Des Moines! Why on earth, I can't say? I'm sure Omaha is a nice place, too.
Iowa / Idaho -- and then there's Boise! LOL!
ah ha you finally got it giggling
I got what you meant ;)
I got what you meant ;)
But did I? ;-)
Relax Carloz, we all know where you live. Not everyone keeps and looks at maps all the time. LOL
My new policy is to check Google Maps before commenting on locations -- maybe. ;-)
Oh Carloz you don't have to do that I'm sure some smarta$$ like me will let you know ..hanging head in shame
Carloz ... Omaha is in Nebraska lol
IMO this is a sick joke or it could possibly be the killer. Whoever it is it is sick to make her friends and family go through this
Carloz ... Omaha is in Nebraska lol
Oops, I knew that, but for some reason I was thinking of Idaho when writing -- I don't know anyone from NE, though!!!
Whoever it is it is sick to make her friends and family go through this
Real sick.
Well now you do I'm from Nebraska, nice to meet you
Thanks, KJakers! Nice to meet you, too! Are your from Omaha or Idaho? :-D
LOL originally SD but in Ne panhandle now
SD is another place I've never been. I hope to make it to that part of the country someday -- don't worry, I'll make sure to have a good map.
Well if you do get down this way stop and say hi, I would love to show you or anyone the beautiful Black Hills
The Omaha metro area is getting worse and worse as each year passes, the election this year is centered around the increasing crime rates :(

And Des Moines is in Iowa, not idaho *GRIN* btw Carloz I too am from Nebraska... I live in the Irish capital (O'Neill) we have a big celebration on St. Patricks' day... (OK... mostly it's just an excuse for people to get drunk) but it DOES bring in revenue from a LOT of college kids!
Omaha, Idaho, Iowa -- maybe it's all the owaowao sounds! Or maybe I just need a geography lesson!!! Somebody get me a map!!!
As said earlier...it's spam. I really, really doubt it's the killer or some twisted moron that gets kicks out of pouring salt into old wounds. It's most likely just classmates.com spamming email out using names from it's database.
As said earlier...it's spam.
As ratty as that is, I suppose that would be better than it being the killer or someone playing a sick joke.
I'm curious as to where Classmates.Com gets their information. I always figured they just got a hold of Yearbooks. I'm sure schools aren't sending info to them as that would "violate privacy laws", I think. And if it is just yearbooks, how would they be able to verify anything except name and graduation year? Just asking, not trying to offend anyone.
Classmates.com has been using names from high school records with out the permission of said classmates. I have been getting messages for months that certain classmates want to get in touch with me, its not true. Classmates is a CON! I will not be rejoining them ever.
Thanks, PRD-660244. That's probably the answer.
Thanks for the answer. I have never joined Classmates.com and certainly wouldn't now. I also hate the ads that keep popping up.
I think that whenever anyone new signs up to Classmates they send out an e-mail to everyone from that school in that year. Someone may have been just posting information about her to let people know what happenned to her. It would probably be better if they had an obit section on the web site to let former classmates know when someone has died. Most likely this was an innocent attempt by someone trying to get information out about her, but I agree Classmates practices need to be researched about Spamming people whenever someone new signs up. you don't have to join them to post information about yourself or anyone else.
Classmates.com is the lowest scum web site that I have ever had the misfortune of visiting. Never Again.
An email is showing up in the members' inbox's. The subject line says "Remember Mary Cronin? Say hi to the newest class of '83 alum to join."
Classmates has no ethics and no class.
Thing is Mary Cronin, class of '83, didn't make it to her ten year reunion. Someone murdered her in April of 1992. Her killer has never been caught.
Classmates Sucks......
Im on Classmates.. But YOU are the one that has to give the info as to where you are born and went to school and which school site of theirs you want to have your name added to. I dont pay the $30 or so a year fee.. I cant afford it. and then again.. I dont think there are people that I graduated with that WANT to see me. I know a few of the people *I* dont want to see.. I have never gotten 'spam' from the classmates site. I just get weekly or monthly 'updates' from people who have seen my profile on the site. otherwise.. there isnt anything other 'spam' I get from them. Someone had to have used her name... POSSIBLY as a joke.. to gain access to people.. I think it is just someone that had a sick snese of humor and thought it would be 'fun' to use her name.. But as well all agree... its definately NOT funny.
Very strange! I am not real happy with Classmates.com right now anyways. I am an alumni of Terry Parker High School and we are planning the reunion ourselves. CM.com caters to "Reunion Planners", not alumni. Even though I pay every month. I don't get it.
CM.com caters to "Reunion Planners", not alumni. Even though I pay every month. I don't get it.
That's tacky. I've never wanted to join, but after reading comments on this seed, I am now actually averse to it.
It could have been a classmate, or someone that went to hs with her, using the name to check out the website/ people there. The name could have just popped into their head, or just picked a random person from the yearbook. It is not uncommon for people to have fake profiles. Or like someone else suggested, spam. I have got a message from classmates saying Jennifer is searching for you. I was her roommate at that time, so she was not searching for me.
It is not uncommon for people to have fake profiles
So, it's common on Classmates.com?
I have got a message from classmates saying Jennifer is searching for you. I was her roommate at that time, so she was not searching for me.
The more I hear about this, the more I lean towards SPAM.
