Doctor Who? After months of febrile speculation the BBC tonight revealed the identity of the 11th Doctor. Not a prominent black actor, nor a woman, nor any of the high-profile names touted to play the iconic Time Lord.
Instead, the honour of wielding the sonic screwdriver and battling Daleks and Zygons has fallen to relative unknown Matt Smith – at 26 he is the youngest Doctor in the 45 years since the Tardis first landed at the BBC.
Whovians, too, were impressed. "We think it is a great choice to have someone so young. David Tennant was the most energetic Doctor ever, and you need somebody with youth and energy to take that forward," said Sebastian Brook, editor of the drwho-online fan website.
Punters had tipped Paterson Joseph, one of the stars of the recent Survivors sci-fi series, and Golden Globe winner Chiwetel Ejiofor as contenders for the first black Doctor, while Catherine Tate and Catherine Zeta Jones had been suggested as female doctors.
I'll miss David Tennant in the role.
Oooooo, but the new guy looks yummy...I would like to see some video of him before passing judgement in the role though.
I like the facial expressions and acting of the current Dr. Who, but he didn't 'appeal' to me if you know what I mean.
I must admit I'm disappointed. It took a long time for me to warm to David Tennant -- I really loved Christopher Eccleston's Doctor, but Tennant just felt way too boy-band in the role at first. It was a while before he sort of grew into the role. Now they've gone and gotten another pretty boy. Meh.
I really wanted Patterson Joseph, whom I loved in Neverwhere (or Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was so brilliant in Kinky Boots), to take the role. Joseph would have been so brilliant, and would've had a little more of the gravity that I feel like the Doctor should have.
Oh, I loved Kinky Boots!!! Which person was he? The cross dresser or the owner of the factory? I haven't seen Neverwhere, so not sure who you are speaking about.
If these are regulars in the UK acting scene, I live in California so am not up on all of them.
Chiwetel Ejiofor was Lola in Kinky Boots (the drag queen). He's fantastic.
Well, I know nothing about this new guy, so I can't say much about him, although the photo the BBC released looks awful to me. Was that the best they could come up with?
As for Chiwetel Ejiofor, I think he's great, too. Kinky Boots was fun, but he was really excellent in Dirty Pretty Things. I've read that he's playing President Thabo Mbeki in a movie coming out this year.
Neverwhere was a BBC TV series written by Neil Gaiman, which he later turned into a book. (IMO, the book was much, much better!) Patterson Joseph played the Marquis De Carabas and he was very good.
I think either one of them would have been a good choice.
I think Catherine Zeta Jones would not have been a good choice. Catherine Tate I know hardly anything about.
Of the other possibilities the BBC had announced, I think James McAvoy or David Morrissey would have been really good. Plus, Sean Pertwee would have been an interesting choice since his dad also played the good Doctor. I don't know enough about Billie Piper or Russell Tovey to have an opinion.
Getting back to Matt Smith, we'll have to wait until 2010 to see how he does.
Catherine Tate was Donna Noble, the Doctor's most recent companion. Although I had some reservations about her at first, I really liked her -- I thought Billie Piper (who was Rose Tyler, the new Doctor's first companion) worked really well with Christopher Eccleston, but she and David Tennant were just too cutesy together, and it was annoying. I never liked Martha Jones (played by Freema Agyeman), mostly because I hated how she was written -- from the very first episode, she was constantly throwing herself at the Doctor, who was so not interested. It was as if the writers didn't know how to write a companion who wasn't madly in love with the Doctor.
When they brought Catherine Tate in, they had someone who was older, more mature, and didn't follow Tennant around like a lovesick puppy. It was a nice change. I could overlook the various problems she might have had because of that.
Matt Smith is going to have a long way to go to convince me he's more than just a pretty boy. I was really in Patterson Joseph's camp.
Thanks for the details, Pev. I should pay more attention to the names of co-stars. ;-)
